D.1. General Information about Program

Back

Ankara State Conservatory was included in the scope of YÖK (Hacettepe University) together with all higher education institutions with the Decree Law No. 41 issued in 1982 and the Law No. 2809 that replaced it in 1983. During the university process, graduate programs have been opened since the beginning of the 1990s in order to train faculty members.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

In order to be accepted to the program, it is required to be an undergraduate graduate of the Composition Art Branch of State Conservatories or equivalent schools and to have passed the Entrance Examination. For international students, the conditions set by Hacettepe University for the admission of students from abroad are valid (http://www.iso.hacettepe.edu.tr).

Entrance Exam

Candidates who meet all the application requirements and apply in accordance with the rules determined by the University are taken to the Entrance Examination.

The Entrance Examination consists of two parts, the written exam, which is evaluated out of 60 (sixty) points, and the oral exam, which is evaluated out of 40 (forty) points, and is evaluated out of a total of 100 (one hundred) full points.

At the beginning of the written exam, a portfolio containing documents and records related to the candidate's curriculum vitae and artistic works is submitted to the Entrance Examination jury in 5 (five) copies. The documents that must be included in this portfolio are as follows:

  • List of works and sheet music: At least one of the works must be an orchestral work, at least one chamber music work and at least one solo work. The total vocalization time of all works must be at least 45 minutes.
  • Audio recordings of the works and video recordings, if any
  • Books, articles, papers or conference texts, if any

Candidates who do not submit this portfolio will be deemed to have waived their exam rights.

In the written exam, candidates are asked questions from the following four topics, each of which is evaluated out of 15 (fifteen) points:

  • Composition Analysis Methods: Harmony and form analysis on a work from the Classical or Romantic Period, as determined by the Entrance Examination jury.
  • Harmony: Analysis of a bass and soprano assignment determined by the Entrance Examination jury.
  • Fugue: Writing the Exposition part of a subject determined by the Entrance Examination jury.
  • Improvisation: Playing a monophonic piece determined by the Entrance Examination jury in accordance with its harmonic language and improvised with piano accompaniment.

Written exam papers are kept for two years.

In the oral exam, candidates are asked questions from the following five topics, each of which is evaluated over 8 (eight) points:

  • Music history and general art culture.
  • Composition techniques.
  • Knowledge of composition literature.
  • Instrumentation and orchestration knowledge.
  • Questions related to the works in the portfolio.

The oral exam is audio and video recorded and the recordings are kept for two years.

The overall success grade of the candidates is the sum of 40% of the undergraduate grade point average and 60% of the score obtained from the Entrance Exam and is evaluated over 100 (one hundred) full points.

Candidates who score at least 50 (fifty) points from the Entrance Examination and whose overall success grade is at least 60 (sixty) are successful and entitled to enroll in the program.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to graduate from the program, the minimum local credit total is 21 and the ECTS credit total is 120.

The aim of the program is to train composers and educators who will work in music and music education institutions, who are equipped with advanced knowledge and skills, who have internalized the ethics of art and science, who closely follow and interpret the developments in their field, who contribute to these developments with their studies in scientific, technological, visual and auditory fields, who are foresighted, respectful, participatory and have a high level of aesthetic appreciation, who are open to innovations and developments.

Graduates of the program can continue their lives as composers individually or work as academicians in higher education institutions or as instructors in private art institutions.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

In the program, 15 national credits mandatory courses including KOM 600 Special Subjects, KOM 601-602 Composition I-II, KOM 607-608 Solfege Techniques I-II, KOM 614 Seminar, 23 national credits elective courses are given. The student is obligatory get the minimum 24 national credits and course of Seminar in order to graduate and complete the program. Total 38 local credits courses are available in the post-graduate program of the Art Branch of Composition. As the courses can be taken from the Art Branch of Composition and Orchestra Conducting, they can be taken from the Conservatory and other departments of the University and university common pool.

  1. Requirements for Graduating from the Program
In order to graduate from this program, student has to fulfil one of the following conditions along with the thesis prepared and achieve field courses and seminar course providing not to have taken less than 24 national credits and 120 ECTS credits as well as fulfilling the graduation requirements defined in the relevant article of the Directive for Graduate Education-Training and Examination at Hacettepe University (http://www.gse.hacettepe.edu.tr).

A) Student also submits the Work Art Report about all works written by him/her within the scope of the composition courses included in Postgraduate education in addition to the partition prepared in computer environment of the Works such as symphonic work, concerto, etc. of at least 20 minutes to be written for exit exam and the records of these if any and the Works written within the scope of composition courses within Postgraduate education in conjunction with his/her works to Jury.

B) In the event that student intends to exit exam with his/her theoretical studies, he/she submits Postgraduate thesis to be written on theory area (solfege, dictation, deciphering, harmony, counterpoint, form knowledge) to Jury.
