D.1. General Information about Program

Department of History of Medicine and Medical Ethics was established in 1998. For undergraduate medical education there are 10 hours History of Medicine courses for Phase 1; 9 hours Introduction to Medical Ethics for Phase 2; and 8 hours Medical Ethics courses for Phase 3 students. For first clinical year students there are multidisciplinary case council and six elective courses for the Phase I, II, III and V students.

For undergraduate dental education four hours of dental ethics courses for Phase 3 and 5, are given by faculty members of History of Medicine and Medical Ethics Department.

For graduate education Ethics Training for Residents has been conducted by the Department since 2001. 

Doctorate programmes are the only way of training specialist in medical ethics and history of medicine area. Medical Ethics and History of Medicine doctorate programme of Hacettepe University Health Sciences Institute, that is one of a few programmes in Turkey, was opened at 21.07.2003. First students were accepted in 2004-2005 academic year. Ten students earned their doctorate degrees and we have 16 doctorate students by now.

The official language of the programme is Turkish; however, students can select elective courses in English offered by any institutes and programmes.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

To be a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry or to have a science specialty in the field of Medicine and Health Sciences or to graduate from a master's program that may be related to the Medical Ethics and History program, provided that it is approved by the academic board of the Department.

Having ALES (SAY) score type and ALES and Foreign Language base score determined by the Health Sciences Institute Board and approved by the Hacettepe University Senate http://www.saglikbilimleri.hacettepe.edu.tr/en/menu/ales_foreign_language_scores-252

To meet the application requirements of Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations and Institute of Health Sciences.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Besides graduation requirements stated Hacettepe University Regulations for Graduate Studies (item 35-41) students must,

  • Successfully complete courses (120 ECTS),
  • Be successful in the doctoral proficiency examination,
  • Attend four national, two international congresses and present four national, two international oral or poster presentation,
  • Publish (or send for publication) an international and a national manuscript based on research projects,
  • Write doctoral thesis (at least 120 ECTS) and be successful in oral defence of doctoral thesis,
  • Deliver required documentation to Health Sciences Institute.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

For transfer of doctoral credits besides requirements of Hacettepe University Regulations for Graduate Studies (item 18) consistency of courses should be approved by academic committee of department.

Similarly transcripts of the students who attended courses by student exchange programmes (e.g. ERASMUS) or special student status should be approved by academic committee of department.

Aim of the Medical Ethics and History of Medicine doctorate program is graduating competent doctors of philosophy with superior quality who are able to describe, interpret, prevent, resolve, and counsel issues related with bioethics, health-care ethics, medical ethics, clinical ethics and history of medicine and predict probable issues in the face of developing new technologies; research, present and publish original and if necessary inter-disciplinary and international research projects in accordance with research and publication ethics; in related areas, establish and conduct training programmes for all level of education based on need assessment.

Program includes courses and seminars on fundamental theories, doctrines, principles and approaches of bioethics, health-care ethics, medical ethics, clinical ethics; encountered issues and problems; ethical reasoning and problem-solving methods, history of medicine and health in evolution process in comparative with the history of science and thought; research methods in bioethics and medical ethics.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

First three semesters of the program consists of 7 required (total 45 ECTS) and elective (45 ECTS) courses. Students can select elective courses form any institutes and programmes with consultation of his/her mentor. One of the required courses was seminar with prerequisites, in which students are expected to prepare their research projects to fulfil qualification requirements. At the last semester of the lecture period students take a required course titled ?Preparation for Proficiency Exam? with 30 ECTS and prepare the exam with consultation of his/her mentor.

Being successful in the doctoral proficiency examination students take ?Special Issues? courses at least 4 semesters and are complete their thesis (with at least 120 ECTS).
