D.1. General Information about Program

 Hacettepe University  Faculty of Medicine Department of Histology and Embryology is established in 1965. Since that time our laboratories have always been  the best  of the time in our country. Now, our light microscopy, electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry and cell / tissue culture laboratories provide opportunities to run studies for research,  education and also  support clinical diagnosis.

Our electron microscopy laboratory which had started to work with one of the first electron microscopes of Turkey at the time, now continues with a technologically advanced Jeol 1014 electron microscope contributing to research studies, education and support the clinical diagnosis in some fields.

 Department of Histology and Embryology has the possibilities to make studies by using advanced digital imaging techniques, quantitative analysing (stereology, image analysis) methods and three-dimensional tissue reconstruction studies. Department of Histology and Embryology is one of the rare departments in our country  where all these resources for research, education and clinical diagnostic support are found together and run together with national and international connections. 

In the PhD programme, educational language is Turkish,  %75 of the lectures are obligatory and %25 are selective. The selective lectures are chosen according to the area of interest of the student, either from the lectures in our programme or from the programmes of other departments  in the Graduate School of Health Sciences. In the 4th half term the lecture `preparation for the doctoral proficiency examination? is obligatory. Students who are successful in this examination starts to study on their thesis and complete it in 4 half terms.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

 To fullfill the criteria of LES and foreign language asked by the Graduate Scholl of Health Sciences

Be a graduate of Faculty of Medicine or a student of MD-PhD combined programme

(Special conditions as ÖYP are considered in Commitee of the Department)

Having ALES (SAY) score type and ALES and Foreign Language base score determined by the Health Sciences Institute Board and approved by the Hacettepe University Senate http://www.saglikbilimleri.hacettepe.edu.tr/en/menu/ales_foreign_language_scores-252

To meet the application requirements of Hacettepe University Postgraduate Education and Examination Regulations and Institute of Health Sciences.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

 The duration of the programme is 8 half years.To fulfill the programme 240 ECTS  credits are necessary being 30 AKTS at each half year.To take the doctoral proficieny exam , 120 ECTS credits must be taken in the first four half years. %25 of these  120 credits must be obtained by taking selective  courses either from the department or from other departments.Success is necessary in all courses taken.In the 4th half year the course for preparation for the proficieny exam will be taken.After passing the proficieny exam the student starts to prepare his/her thesis under the control of his/her advisor and complete it by the end of the last 4 half years.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

The requisities of Postgraduate Education Regulation and Hacettepe University Postgraduate Education and Examination Regulations are applied.In transfers from other edcational institutions the compatitibility of the courses and the success of the student are necessary.Acceptance is considered by the Commitee of the Department.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

 To educate PhD students: who have and follow  the basic and current knowledge on the field of histology and embryology; who can apply current laboratory methods; who can plan and carry on scientific researc studies independenly; who are experienced in teaching; who follow ethical and moral rules.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

 The graduates of the programme can find suitable jobs in Departments of Histology and Embryology   in Medical Faculties, Research and Development centers, IVF centers, Andrology centers, stem cell and other cell-tissue laboratories. 

The graduates can apply for academic positions in universities in our Country or in other Countries; for positions for specialist in reseach centers; to Ministry of Health to take the course on IVF.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

%75 of the courses in the programme are obligatory. %25 selective courses are taken either from the courses of the Department or from other Departments in the Gradute School of Health Sciences. The obligatory courses which will taken in the first three half years include the basic knowledge related to the educational programme.These courses provide student the necessary knowledge, skill and qualification.The selective courses which will taken during these half years are directed towards his/her area of interest.The course of ‘preparation to proficiency exam' is obligatory in the 4th semestre.Obligatory and selective courses are completed in the first four half years.The students who are successful in the first four half years work on their thesis in the last four half years.The percentages of theoretical and practical courses are given in the table.The durations of the obligatory and selective courses in our programme are one half year.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

- 30 ECTS at each half year making a total of 240 ECTS credits must be taken.

- 120 ECTS credits must be taken in the first 4 semestres to take the proficiency exam.90 of these credits must come from the obligatory courses and 30 of them from the selective courses.

- Success is necessary from all courses taken.

- The avarage of theoretical and practical exams must be 70 to pass the proficiency exam.

- PhD thesis must be prepared, finished and must be accepted by the jury inorder to graduate.
