D.1. General Information about Program

Masters with thesis in the Division of German Teaching covers various domains such as language/foreign language, culture, literature, applied linguistics, material development, educational technology. The importance of studies in foreign language education is growing day by day both in the world and our country. In this sense, the need for qualified staff in German education as a foreign language is increasing.

The aim of graduate program in the Division of German Teaching is to raise qualified experts and researchers who are equipped with advanced level of knowledge, skills and qualifications in German teaching and open to working interdisciplinary, new advancements, different cultures.

The medium of instruction of masters with thesis in the Division of German Teaching is German.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

In the program of thesis masters of the Division of German Teaching, the Academic Board of the division determines students ‘acceptance and quota and the decision made by the head of the department is proposed to directorate of Institution.

Candidates who will apply to Masters with thesis of the Division of German Teaching are supposed to have a degree in German Language teaching or German Language and Education or an equivalent degree or an undergraduate degree close to these divisions and they are requıred to have applıcatıon qualıfıcatıons determined in the principles of Hacettepe University Postgraduate Educational Institution and Exam Regulations. Candidates are also supposed to have an adequate score in ALES verbal test or be successful in an equivalent exam.

Candidates who apply the program are required to pass foreign language (German) exam. The evaluation of overall performance is done according to the principles of Hacettepe University Postgraduate Educational Institution and Exam Regulations. Following the results of this evaluation, jury may propose all candidates or some of them to start scientific preparation.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students of graduate program in the Division of German Teaching are required to take compulsory and elective courses provided in fall and spring semesters which are equal to 60 ECTS (30 ECTS+30ECTS) totally and complete thesis study successfully which is equal to 60 ECTS (Totally 120 ECTS).Within thesis study, thesis proposal determined by the student and advisor is to be accepted by Board Resolution of the division. Thesis written in German under the supervision of advisor is supposed to be successful in thesis defense exam. In the condition of thesis' acceptance and being successful, the candidate is given a diploma of expertise in German Language Teaching.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Graduates of German Language Teaching, German Language and Literature and German Translation –Interpreting can apply to graduate level program in German Language Teaching.

Graduates of German Language and Literature and German Translation –Interpreting who apply to the program can start the master degree program when they are accepted, but when the jury finds it necessary, the candidate/candidates may be supposed to take courses in scientific preparation.

The aim of German Language Teaching Graduate Program is to educate specialists who can contribute to solving problems of German language teaching in the light of contemporary methods and ideas in the field of German Language Teaching and to help these people prepare their PhD research.

With these in mind, the program aims to educate people who can evaluate German language teaching from a critical point of view, who have the utmost knowledge, skills and competences, who acquire the wish of lifelong learning, and who are open to interdisciplinary studies, novelties and different cultures.

The graduates of German Language Teaching graduate program can work at universities as academic personal; as specialists in public or private agencies and institutions.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The graduate program of German language teaching consists of compulsory (compulsory seminar) and elective courses (13 courses in total). The program is scheduled for taking compulsory courses and choosing from elective courses to complete 60 ECTS credits. Also, the program requires students to give a thesis proposal at the end of second semester and if it is admitted, it requires a thesis study in return for 60 ECTS credits.

It is necessary to complete 120 ECTS credits (60 ECTS credits from courses + 60 ECTS credits from thesis study) to graduate from German language teaching graduate program.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The students are required to take a final exam at the end of the semester aside from the studies done during the semester and exams. There is at least one midterm exam in every semester.
