D.1. General Information about Program

The PhD program of the Classical Turkish Literature is a program of Hacettepe University Institute of Social Sciences Department of Turkish Language and Literature. The PhD program began in 1969.

The main objective of the program is to educate scientists who have the ability to evaluate literary products written in Divan literature at a high level. In line with this aim, classical literature theory, historical development, types and literary trends, etc. subjects were included in the program. Another objective of the program is to provide the student with the knowledge that will provide the basis for interdisciplinary studies.

The courses in the PhD program examine the historical, philosophical, religious, social and artistic traditions that shape classical Turkish literature in the light of scientific methods. The program enables students to conduct scientific research in this field, reinforcing their ability to access, evaluate and interpret information. The aim of the program is to provide students with the ability to critically look at literary and cultural products based on the classical Turkish literature.

The language of the program is Turkish and it is necessary for the students to have a foreign language to enable them to follow the related literature.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

1. Graduated from the departments of Turkish Language and Literature, Turkish Language and Literature Teaching, Arabic Language and Literature, Persian Language and Literature of the universities or related departments of universities abroad whose equivalence is approved by YÖK (Council of Higher Education).

2. Required to have at least 60 standart points on verbal point type of Academic Staff and Graduate Education Examination (ALES) that is held by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) or to have a score equal to 60 on internationally accepted GRE and GMAT that is determined by the Senate of Hacettepe University.

3. Required to have at least 60 in the Foreign Knowledge in Foreign Language Placement Examination (Yabancı Dil Seviye Tespit Sınavı, YDS). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score from other foreign language examinations, held at the national or international level, whose equivalence is approved by ÖSYM.

4. International students' applications are accepted in line within “Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).

Candidates who meet the above application requirements are admitted to the program entrance exam. Candidates who obtain the minimum score determined by the department in the evaluation of written and / or interview exams are considered successful. The ranking of the successful candidates is made by the examination jury according to the overall success grade.

The issues not mentioned above will be applied in accordance with the relevant provisions of Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation (Hacettepe Üniversitesi Lisansüstü Eğitim Öğretim ve Sınav Yönetmeliği).

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The requirements for the Ph.D. program in the field of Classical Turkish Literature are taking courses, passing the proficiency exam, writing a dissertation, and presenting a successful thesis defense. Students are required to take a minimum of 120 ECTS credits for coursework and a minimum of 120 ECTS credits for the Ph. D. dissertation (240 ECTS credits in sum) in order to graduate. Students who pass each of their courses and have a minimum GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00 are eligible to take the Ph.D. proficiency exam. The students who successfully pass the exam are then eligible to work on their dissertations under the guidance of the dissertation committee and present it to the jury. D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Students who earn the right to enroll in the doctorate program in the Classical Turkish Literature can be exempt from certain courses within the scope of related rules and regulations. If the content of a course taken at another university matches a given course at Hacettepe University and is accepted by the educational board, the student can be exempted from that course.

Students, who have studied at Hacettepe University or at other institutions of higher education for at least one year, can apply for a transfer to the doctorate program of Classical Turkish Literature. To be accepted, applicants must meet the terms of acceptance and pass each of the master's courses they have taken for at least one semester. The admission and legal procedures of students who are found eligible by the department for the transfer are fulfilled after the decision of the institute council.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The courses in the program focus on the historical, social, literary, linguistic aspects of the Classical Turkish Literature. Program aims to teach history of classical Turkish literature on detail, to analyse texts in-depth, to teach and apply contemporary linguistic and literary methods on classical Turkish literature. One of the goals of this programme is to educate teachers, experts and scientists in the field of Turkish language and literature.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Career opportunities for the graduates of the Classical Turkish Literature are quite diverse. While some of our graduates work as teachers and lecturers or research assistants in related departments of private and state universities, others work at ministries, at national and international institutions and companies, at visual and print media institutions, at publishing houses and news agencies.

The Ph.D. program of the Classical Turkish Literature consists of 240 ECTS credits: A minimum of 120 ECTS credits for coursework and a minimum of 120 ECTS credits for the dissertation.

Students who have a minimum GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00 are eligible to take the PhD. proficiency exam. Those who pass the exam present their dissertation proposal. Students whose proposals are accepted begin working on their dissertations under the guidance of their dissertation committees.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Assessment and grading criteria (mid terms, homework, final exams, etc.) and examination regulations for each course and their percentages are defined under the title of “Assessment Methods” in the program's course Information pack. Final exams are carried out on certain dates determined by the university and at certain times and places announced by the department. Students' final semester grades are determined by the instructor offering the course and are based on the students' mid-term and final grades, the coursework they did during the term and their attendance record. In order to successfully complete the program, students must take and pass all the required courses in their program and earn a minimum of 120 ECTS credits (24 national credits) for coursework and thesis work.
