D.1. General Information about Program

Department of Medical Education & Informatics was founded in 2000. The main activity areas of the department are education and research. There are routine works on program development, student assessment and program evaluation in medical school. The department has lectures in the first three years of medical school, and in the first two years of dentistry school. Good Medical Practice, Patient Safety and Interprofessional Education, Becoming a Physician and Medicine and Social Responsibility programs have been developed, organized and conducted by the Department of  Medical Education and Informatics. Masters Degree program was implemented in 2004.

It is required to train the manpower that will conduct academic studies and research in the departments of medical education and informatics established in Turkish medical faculties, and will contribute the development of medical education in our country like the international area. These programs are founded and conducted for the special and specific needs of education and evaluation in medicine. These programs also contribute to the training of manpower in the field of instruction in dentistry, nursing and pharmacy. 

Each academic year, 3-6 new students are admitted to the master's program.

Internship practice is not included in the program.

The courses in master program of medical education are in Turkish, and there is no course in any foreign language.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

• Graduates of the schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and health sciences, and graduates of the bachelor degree schools of nursing, physiotherapy, dietetics and child development.
• Graduates of master's degree programs of educational sciences
• Having the conditions mentioned in the Regulations of Hacettepe University Postgraduate Education and Instruction
• Being successful in the oral exam held by the commission which consists of the representatives of HUFM Medical Education & Informatics Dept and HUFL Educational Sciences Division

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Masters Program in Medical Education is a 4-semester program. Program requires completion of the courses not less than 21 credits (120 ECTS), the course of special subjects and a thesis. B3 level is required to be successful in the courses.  The student who completed the compulsory courses and had at least 2.75 (B3) can propose a thesis after the second semester. The subject and the possible title of the thesis should be assigned by the student and the consultant.  It should be evaluated by the academic council. The results should be written regarding the directory of writing thesis. The thesis should be presented to a jury. The jury must evaluate the thesis as successful.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

The students who completed successfully at least one semester at an equivalent program in a national institution or abroad can have the opportunity of the lateral transfer or the approval of the equivalent courses completed in a different institution. The applications are accepted in case of having appropriate quota, the student's meeting of the requirements, and having at least B3 for every course. The lateral transfer of a student or the approval of the courses are evaluated in the academic council of the department and the board of the institute.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The graduates of the master's degree program of medical education will conceptualize the specific instructional principles and methods of the field, be able to develop a program specific to the medicine and health sciences, will be able to apply the measurement and evaluation methods and approaches specific to the field, will be able to plan, conduct and evaluate the results of an educational research.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates of this program may apply for medical education doctorate programs in Turkey and around the world. They can work as experts in the departments or units of medical education established in medical schools. They can also work in simulation centers or measurement and assessment centers as experts in the field of education, research and evaluation. They can also work as expert/consultant to the NGOs for the development, conduct and evaluation of educational programs. They can work in the centers founded at health sciences schools.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The courses in the program are semester based. In the first year of the program, courses are mostly lecture based, the last year covering the thesis has practical activities as well. 

Minimum 120 ECTS should be gathered in order to graduate from the program. 1 ECTS corresponds 30 hours student workload.

The first year is organized to fulfill the fundamentals of medical education. They prepare the students for the following year to plan the thesis. In the first two semesters, 30% of the courses are electives. Elective courses are included in both semesters to meet the students' interest areas. Students can choose courses from the university's other programs or even from other universities after consultant's approval.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

Students who complete successfully the courses and get the appropriate credits in the first year prepare their thesis in the second year. They present their thesis to a jury, and are evaluated.
