D.1. General Information about Program

Ankara State Conservatory was included in the scope of YÖK (Hacettepe University) together with all higher education institutions with the Decree Law No. 41 enacted in 1982 and the Law No. 2809 that replaced it in 1983. In the university process, the Proficiency in Art program has been opened since 2005 in order to train faculty members.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

In order to apply for the program, in addition to the conditions required by the current legislation;

  • Having a master's degree in composition after graduating from the Composition undergraduate programs of conservatory equivalent educational institutions in the field of composition,
  • At least 55 points from YDS, e-YDS or YOKDÄ°L or an equivalent score from one of the other national or international language exams accepted by ÖSYM is required.

Entrance Exam

Candidates who meet all the application requirements and apply in accordance with the rules determined by the university are taken to the Entrance Examination.

The Entrance Examination consists of two parts; the written exam, which is evaluated out of 60 (sixty) points, and the oral exam, which is evaluated out of 40 (forty) points, and is evaluated out of a total of 100 (one hundred) full points.

At the beginning of the written exam, a portfolio containing documents and records related to the candidate's curriculum vitae and artistic works is presented to the jury members in 5 (five) copies. The documents that should be included in this file are as follows:

  • List of works and sheet music: At least two orchestral works or one orchestra and one large ensemble (for at least 9 performers). The total duration of all works must be at least 60 minutes.
  • Audio recordings of the works, video recordings if available,
  • Books, articles, papers or conference texts, if any,

Candidates who do not submit this file are deemed to have waived their right to take the exam.

In the written exam, candidates are asked questions from the following four topics, each of which is evaluated out of 15 (fifteen) points:

  • Composition Analysis Methods: Analysis of harmony and form on a Classical or Romantic or Late Romantic or 20th century work selected by the jury.
  • Harmony: Analysis of a bass and soprano assignment determined by the jury.
  • Fugue: Writing the exhibition part of a theme determined by the jury.
  • Improvisation: Playing a monophonic piece determined by the jury in accordance with its harmonic language and improvisation with piano accompaniment.

Written exam papers are archived for two years.

In the oral exam, the candidates are asked questions from the following five topics, each of which is evaluated out of 8 (eight) points:

  • Music history and general art culture,
  • Composition techniques,
  • Knowledge of composition literature,
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and orchestration,
  • Questions related to the works in the portfolio.

The oral exam is recorded in audio and video format and the recordings are archived for two years.

The overall success grade of the candidates is the sum of 40% of the undergraduate GPA and 60% of the score obtained from the Entrance Examination and is evaluated over 100 (one hundred) full points. Candidates who score at least 60 (sixty) points from the Entrance Examination and whose overall success grade is at least 70 (seventy) are considered successful. In case of equality of the general success grade, the score of the Entrance Exam is taken into consideration.

Students who have successfully completed the compulsory courses and other courses they have chosen, provided that they have at least 21 local credits and 240 ECTS credits, and whose artwork and artwork report are found successful by the exam jury as a result of the Defense Exam, are entitled to graduate from the Program with the decision of the Institute Administrative Board.

The aim of the program is to educate composers and educators who will work in music and music education institutions; who are equipped with advanced knowledge and skills; who have internalized the ethics of art and science; who closely follow and interpret the developments in the field; who contribute to these developments with their studies in scientific, technological, visual and auditory fields; who are foresighted, respectful, participatory and have a high level of aesthetic appreciation; who are open to innovations and developments.

Graduates of the program can pursue a career as a composer individually, as well as work as academicians in higher education institutions or as instructors in private art institutions.

In the program, KOM 700 Special Topics, KOM 701 - 702 Composition I - II, KOM 721 - 722 Method Analysis I - II, YET 790 Preparation for Proficiency Examination are compulsory courses and elective courses. The student must complete the program by completing the minimum 21 local credits and 240 ECTS required for graduation.

Requirements for graduation from the program

Students who pass the compulsory courses and other courses they have chosen and whose art work is found successful by the jury as a result of the Defense Examination, provided that it is not less than 21 local credits and 240 ECTS credits, are entitled to graduate from the Program with the decision of the Institute Administrative Board.

The following are presented within the Defence Exam:

  • An artwork (orchestral work of at least 20 minutes duration [for symphonic orchestra at least] or for a mixed choir of at least 4 voices (for Adult Choir).
  • An Artwork Report (on the orchestral work submitted for the defense exam or on another work selected from the music literature).
