D.1. General Information about Program

Back

Hacettepe University, the Department of Computer Engineering, was established in 1971 as a department of the Institute of Informatics at Hacettepe. The department is one of the first two departments which started bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering in 1977. The department is currently dependent on the Faculty of Engineering offers 4 years of formal education. The three main branches of the department are Computer Science, Computer Software, Computer Hardware. Parallel to this situation Master of Science degree curriculum is constructed in axis of the 3 main branches.

At our Department of Computer Engineering, we have master of science (MSc), doctor of philosophy (PhD) and integrated PhD on the postgraduate level. The registration to the MSc program requires a bachelor's degree diploma. A student could be registered to the PhD program and the integrated PhD program with a bachelor's degree or MSc degree diploma. For application to graduate programs the students should follow announcements and application procedures that are given in the web page of the Institute of Sciences. Our graduate program requirements for M.S. and Ph.D. programs are outlined on the General Information webpage and the detailed information about the graduate programs can be accessed through the Institute of Science webpage.

Doctor of Philosophy Degree (PhD) program courses are taught in Turkish. The three main periods of the programme are course, qualification and thesis period. PhD students must take 8 graduate courses (24 credits). In addition to these elective graduate courses, all PhD students must take three non-credit must-courses. All credit courses are offered as electives in the program so it gives students opportunity to specialize in any branch of the computer science.

Our department provides well developed laboratories to our students. These are the laboratories and systems in our department: SUN® Lab. with 25 terminals, two Programming Laboratories with 30 and 24 personal computers, Software Engineering Laboratories with 20 personal computers, Digital Systems and Micro Processing Laboratory for 25 students, Network Laboratory based on Cisco® hardware.

Our department graduates take the title of “doctor computer engineer” after the graduation. The Hacettepe University Doctor Computer Engineers have many options when they start working life. They can work at many fields of engineering and management positions in large organizations in Turkey and around the world. Doctor computer engineers can find positions in all sectors of a wide range of public and private organizations. These positions are systems analyst, systems engineer, systems programmer, database administrator, software engineer, sales-support engineer, development engineer, design engineer, network engineer, communication and information security specialist, research scientist, administrator.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

Back

The graduate programs of the Department of Computer Engineering at Hacettepe University aim to equip graduate students with the necessary advanced knowledge and ability to carry out independent research work in computer engineering and computer science fields. Our graduate programs contribute the development of specialized computer engineers and scientists needed in industry and academia.

The content of programme consist of three parts: course period, qualifying exam and thesis period. His/her course/thesis advisor of all students enrolled in doctor of philosophy programme of department, must be certain until the end of the first semester. All students take seminar course in the first semester of course period. Regular course sessions are arranged with the respective lecturer of the seminar course and are taken attendance. Thesis/course advisor participate the session of seminar course that student will present. In addition to the credit courses and seminar course, MSc students must take non-credit courses such as Academic Skills and Practices, and Research Methods in Computer Science in two different terms. A faculty member is assigned for BIL 691 and BIL 791; however, the grades of students for this course are given by the course/thesis advisors.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Back

Program graduates work in many different positions in public or private sectors such as software engineer, systems engineer, database administrator, database architect, network and internet security specialist, IT security specialist / administrator, network administrator, network engineer, hardware technician, control engineer, embedded systems specialist, web design specialist, system designer. Information technology sector has entered almost every domain such as training, health, service sector, defense industry and have been used extensively. For this reason, computer engineer who is the essential actor of the information world performs their duties in the institutions about all these areas.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Back

Ph.D. students accepted with M.S. degrees must take (24 credits). Nearly 40 elective course definitions are available in the programme. Image Processing, Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition, Voice Recognition, Data Mining, Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Computer Networks, Encryption, Parallel Processing, Dedicated Systems, Semantic Web, Algorithm Analysis, Compiler Implementation, Computer Graphics, Gaming Technologies, Robotics, Data Base Management Systems, Spatial Information Systems at different levels in a wide variety of post-graduate courses in computer engineering take place in the programme. In addition to these elective graduate courses, all M.S. students must take two non-credit must-courses. These three non-credit must-courses are BÄ°L691- Academic Skills and Practices, BÄ°L791 - Research Methods in Computer Science, and BÄ°L701 - Graduate Seminar. According to the regulations of the Institute of Science, PhD students enrolled with MSc degrees have to finish their course work in four semesters, and Ph.D. students enrolled with undergraduate degrees must finish their course work in six semesters. Students with MSc degrees may take at most 3, and students with BSc degrees may take at most 6 of the required credit courses from departments other than Computer Engineering Department.

Each Ph.D. student has to pass PhD qualifying exam after finishing his/her course work. According to the regulations of Institute of Science, PhD students enrolled with MSc degrees must take Ph.D. qualifying exam before the end of their fifth semester, and Ph.D. students accepted with undergraduate degrees must take Ph.D. qualifying exam before the end of their seventh semester. Ph.D. qualifying exam consists of a written part and an oral part. Ph.D. qualifying exam is offered each semester. The details of Ph.D. qualifying exam can be reachable on Ph.D. Qualifying Exam Web Page. In the next six months after passing Ph.D. qualifying exam, each Ph.D. student must prepare a thesis proposal, and present the thesis proposal in front of a thesis jury. After the approval of the thesis proposal, the student actively works on the thesis work. The student presents the progress of the thesis to the thesis jury every six months. In order to attend the Ph.D. thesis defense, the student must publish a journal article based on his/her thesis work in a reputable journal (Journals in SCI, SCI-Expanded, or acceptable AHCI and SSCI Indexes), and an international conference article. The student who satisfies all other requirements of Ph.D. studies defends his/her thesis in front of a thesis defense jury. The student has to finish his/her Ph.D. work and writing of his/her Ph.D. thesis before the Ph.D. thesis defense. The student has to hand in a copy of his/her Ph.D. thesis to each of his/her Ph.D. thesis defense jury members at least 15 days before his/her Ph.D. thesis defense.
