AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING PROGRAMME


D.1. General Information about Program

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering undergraduate program admitted its first stream of students in 2005-2006 academic year. The first group of students graduated in 2010.

The language of instruction in the program is English. The students must succesfully pass language proficiency test in English to begin their program. The program offers a solid background in Mechanical Engineering along with automotive engineering education which seperates itself from other similar programs. The graduates of the program mainly work in leading automotive, defense, machine, manufacturing and energy firms.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering program was accredited by Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs (MUDEK) (http://www.mudek.org.tr) starting from May 1st, 2015 and received EUR-ACE Bachelor (European Accreditation of Engineering Programmes) label.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering currently has 15 faculty members. The department is very active in research and also offers M.S. and PhD programs in Mechanical Engineering. The research focus of the department lies in the areas of automotive engineering, solid mechanics and design, mechanisms and machine theory, materials, control, mechatronics, sensors and thermal-fluids engineering and energy.

Turkish Nationals need to obtain a sufficient score in the MF-4 category of the nationwide University Entrance Examination administered by OSYM. International student admissions and lateral student transfers are carried out according to the regulations set forth by the Registrar's Office.

Students who started their 1st semester in 2012-2013 academic year and later must succesfully complete at least 240 ECTS credits including MMU 200 Machine Shop Training, OMU 300 Summer Practice I and OMU 400 Summer Practice II, based on the curriculum given in D.8.

The aim of the program is, to educate engineers who are equipped with world-class research, development and design skills, sensitive to development and environmental subject and who can lead the technological enhancements which are suitable for national necessities and addition the these, during the period of research and development activities to contribute to the national and international technology and research and development activities as well

Graduates can work in private sector, government, and continue to graduate level studies.

The graduates mainly work in R&D, testing, product development, quality control, manufacturing, marketing, and sales departments of automotive, defense, machine and energy industries.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The program is mainly composed of,

  • Fundamental science courses (Calculus, Differential Equations, Physics and Chemistry),
  • Engineering mathematics courses (Numerical Analysis, Applied Engineering Mathematics),
  • Core mechnical engineering courses (Thermodynamics, Materials Science, Statics, Dynamics, Manufacturing, Mechnics of Materials, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Machine Design, Machine Theory, System Dynamics and Control, Vibration, Measurements),
  • Core automotive engineering courses (Principles of Chassis and Drivetrain Components, Internal Combustion Engines, Vehicle Component Design, Vehicle Dynamics),
  • Technical elective courses in a wide range of mechanical, automotive and industrial engineering subjects,
  • Non-technical electives,
  • Machine shop training and summer practices,
  • Three capstone design courses (Design Project I and II, Thermal Engineering and Design).

The education is also supplemented by laboratory education in various undergraduate courses.

The procedure of assessment and evaluation for each course is defined in the course information package, prepared by the corresponding instructors.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

Students who started their 1st semester in 2013-2014 academic year and later must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Students should succesfully complete at least 240 ECTS.
  • Students should succesfully complete all must courses given in D.8.
  • Students should succesfully complete 50 ECTS of technical electives.
  • Students should succesfully complete 10 ECTS of non-technical electives.
  • Students should succesfully complete at least 15 ECTS of OMÜ coded technical elective courses.
  • Students should succesfully complete at least 30 ECTS of MMÜ or OMÜ coded technical elective courses.
  • Students should succesfully complete machine shop training (MMU 200) and summer practices (OMU 300, OMU 400) which are each 20 business days.
