D.1. General Information about Program

Back

The Department of International Relations was established by a decision of the Hacettepe University Senate. It began education with the Master's Degree Program (with thesis) in the 1997-1998 Academic Year. The aim of the PhD program is to raise academicians to work both inside and outside Turkey either in newly or well-established universities, as well as to give the opportunity to its graduates to specialize in different areas of the discipline. This program is runs under the Institute of Social Sciences. The language of the program is English.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

1. The applicants, in principle, must hold a Master's Degree in International Relations or Political Science. If applicants who were admitted to the program are not the graduates of International Relations or Political Science programmes, they may have to take the scientific preparation courses from the Undergraduate and/or Graduate Curriculum. Based on the examination of the concerned students' transcripts, the courses to be taken as part of the scientific preparation will be determined by the Academic Board of the Department. In order to be admitted to the program, students must be successful in all preparatory courses.

2. The applicants must have an ALES equally weighted score that meet the minimum score of 65, or in accordance with the equivalence defined by the Senate of Hacettepe University must have an internationally recognized GRE or GMAT score, which is equivalent to 65 in ALES.

3. The applicants must have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.00 over 4 (or its equivalent) for the MA degree.

4. The applicants must have YDS scores that meet the minimum score of 80 or must have scores equivalent to 80 on the tests that are recognized on national and international levels, and the equivalence of which is approved by ÖSYM.

5. In order to be admitted to the Programme, the ordering of the applicants is based on a total score calculated by a sum of 50% of the ALES score, 10% of the CGPA of the Master's Degree, 10% of the YDS score and 30% of the entrance exam score of the applicants. Those applicants who have received a score less than 60 in their entrance exam are considered to be unsuccessful. The entrance exam to be made by the faculty members will be an oral exam.

6. International students' applications are accepted in line with “Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulations" published in the Official Gazette No. 29900 on 29 November 2016.

7. Those conditions, which are not included above, are applied in accordance with the related provisions of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations (Hacettepe Üniversitesi Lisansüstü Eğitim, Öğretim ve Sınav Yönetmeliği).

Special Conditions for Application:

In the applications for 2019-2020 Academic Year, two reference letters (in English) and a statement of purposes (in English) will be required from the applicants.

Applicants are required to submit these documents along with the other required documents within the official dates of application.

The applicants who fulfil the above stated requirements will be admitted to the entrance exam. In the oral exam, those who obtain the minimum grade determined by the Academic Board are considered successful. Successful applicants will be sorted and admitted to the program according to the overall grade they obtain.

Completing 8 courses (7 courses and 1 seminar) (21 credits/90 ECTS), succeeding in PhD Qualification exam and successfully completing the Ph.D. dissertation. D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

To be able to transfer a Ph.D. degree to Ph.D. in International Relations at Hacettepe University, fulfiling the admission terms is required. For other issues, the related items of Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations will be valid.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The aim of the Ph.D. program is to make students obtain academic expertise in different areas of the International Relations discipline. To this end, in addition to compulsory courses, a wide variety of elective courses are offered. By this, Ph.D. candidates are enabled in terms of choosing a specific area of expertise and develop their skills accordingly.

Graduates of the Ph.D. in International Relations of Hacettepe University are able to be employed by prestigious universities, international organizations and/or public institutions.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The Ph.D. program comprises of four years, wherein the first two years are for the courses and the last two are for the dissertation. Of the total ECTS that needs to be obtained throughout the degree, 50 is acquired from elective courses, 40 is acquired from compulsory courses, 30 is obtained from Preparation for PhD Proficiency course and 120 is obtained from the Special Issues course. Of all the courses taken during the PhD degree a maximum of two courses can be chosen from the curriculum of the MA programme with the condition that they were not taken previously.

For the students to successfully complete the programme, they need to complete their dissertation within a period of 4 semesters (if an extension is granted, within a period 8 semesters), and their study needs to be accepted as a PhD dissertation.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

Those who have been accepted and registered to the PhD programme may be asked to get scientific preparation courses for a semester or two semesters if deemed necessary. For a student to earn the PhD degree, s/he is required to take three compulsory courses in the fall and spring semesters, one of which is the non-credit Seminar course; to take five elective courses to successfully complete 21 credits (90 ECTS); to pass the PhD proficiency exam; to be successful in the Special Issues course that is to be taken during the PhD dissertation writing period; to write a dissertation under the supervision of a thesis supervisor; and to successfully pass the PhD defence.

Students who meet the conditions of graduation indicated in the Hacettepe University Regulations for Graduate Program earn a right to graduate from this program.
