D.1. General Information about Program

Back

Hacettepe University Medical School (HUMS), Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology has been a pioneer and a leading institution of Orthopedics in Turkey since its first establishment through the qualified staff trained by the department. Being a part of Hacettepe University (HU), having the largest and equipped children's hospital of Turkey, has obliged specialization in children's muscles and skeletal system problems, and has facilitated the academic productivity. Pediatric orthopedics and pediatric spine surgery is a privileged field that requires specialization after general orthopedics and traumatology training. In developed countries, there have been very important developments in this field in the last 30 years; strong, productive expertise associations have been established, especially in the USA, the standards of well-established child orthopedics specialization (fellowship) programs have been rapidly created and become widespread.

In our country where the majority of the population is composed of individuals under the age of 18, although a specialized association operating in the field of pediatric orthopedics has been operating for more than 15 years, the trained workforce in this area is far from meeting the need. A small number of our colleagues continue to return and serve to our country after completing their education abroad. Currently, there is no faculty staff, who are competent in the field of pediatric orthopedics in the majority of the Universities and Public hospitals that provide the specialist education. For this reason, our children cannot benefit from the opportunities of modern medicine at the level they deserve.

As a result of the pioneering identity of the HU in general, and our department in particular, it was decided to open this program in order to meet this shortage and the future needs of our institution and our country to skilled staff. If this program becomes an example to other universities in the future, a valuable contribution to the solution of an important problem of our country will be presented.
