D.1. General Information about Program

At the end of this program, the graduate students will be able to discuss the effects of surgery on the body/tissues with regard to the cell biology; will understand these effects with multidisciplinary approach that covers immunologic, metabolic, genetic and physiological changes; will have knowledge about the effects of unique surgical procedures to disease pathophysiology, which applied to characteristic diseases such as cancer; will have knowledge about biological steps of recovery and the systemic effects of these steps; will learn how to ask novel questions; will be able to design and evaluate a scientific project; will be able to perform cell/tissue culture, molecular techniques, immunologic techniques and animal research; will be able to plan research that correlates clinic and basic research; will be able to write a scientific report, a poster, a presentation and a scientific article.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

Graduates of schools of medicine, veterinary and dentistry; students who completed their master's degree programs in the fields associated with basic sciences or biology could apply to this program. Applicants, who fulfill the ALES and ENGLISH PROFICIENCY EXAM criteria, will be interviewed for evaluation of their acceptability. In the interview, the knowledge on basic surgery, basic biology, physiology and the familiarity and desire will be evaluated. Also, the ability to use of English will be tested. The students, who will succeed, will gain right to register.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Back

PhD education for surgical research requires having at least 240 ECTS credits in at least 8 semesters or having an equivalent study abroad.

Being successful from Doctoral Proficiency Exam and having an approval from the academic committee of the department for thesis proposal.

Fulfilling the Hacettepe University Postgraduate Education, Training and Evaluation Guidelines and Regulations, having the majority of the jury in the thesis defense.

Before the completion of the PhD thesis, publishing at least one scientific article and presenting in an international meeting is required.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

The prior learning on being graduated from schools of medicine, veterinary and dentistry and completion of a master's degree programs in the fields associated with basic sciences or biology will be accepted.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

Training scientists, who knows the effect of surgery on body physiology, cell biology, wound healing, immunology and disease pathophysiology, who are able to improve alternative methods and approaches to clinical applications, who are able to develop novel therapy methods and who are able to propose innovations that increase the life quality of the patients. Educating scientists who have scientific observation ability, who are able to plan the essential steps to solve a scientific problem, who have a vision and knowledge to integrate the different areas of health sciences into research process.

In this program, surgeon, basic scientist, academicians who shows a multidisciplinary approach in both areas, and scientists who are able to take part in research and development units, are being raised and these students will be able to perform and develop his/her academic studies on specialized clinic and health sciences on PhD level. Graduates of the surgical research PhD program will be capable of enlighten and guide the society, contribute to national and international policies, transfer their academic and clinical know-how in national and international scientific environments, contribute to both surgical and basic sciences by developing the functional level, use the knowledge for the benefit of mankind and have the competence on improving the life quality in the light of unique evaluations.

Surgical Research doctoral program consists of 240 ECTS course, which includes both Must and elective courses. Students may take appropriate courses from different programs.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

In order to have a doctoral degree from Surgical Research field, successfully completing the at least 240 ECTS course package of the program and successfully defending the thesis is required. Before the completion of the PhD thesis, publishing at least one scientific article and presenting in an international meeting is also required.
