D.1. General Information about Program

The Geomatics Engineering Undergraduate Program started in 2013-2014 fall semester. The courses are taught in English. The Master of Science Program has been ongoing since 2011-2012 spring semester.

The Doctoral Program in Geomatics Engineering is offered by Geomatics Engineering Department under the Graduate School of Science and Engineering. The language of instruction for the program is English. Recent advancements in information technologies and geomatics engineering have been considered in the development of the program. Students in the program can specialize in various areas of geomatics engineering including; geodesy, surveying, photogrammetry, remote sensing, global navigation satellite systems, geographical information systems, cartography, and land management.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

For admission to the program, applicant should meet the following criteria:

· Having M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in disciplines approved by the Department.

· Satisfying the minimum score determined by the University Senate for the Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES).

· Meeting the minimum required score from a national or international English proficiency exam recognized by the University Senate.

· Acquiring sufficient score from oral and/or written entrance exam held by the Department.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to earn the Ph.D. degree, students are required to complete 240 ECTS credits in total. 90 ECTS credits of this total should be completed from compulsory and elective courses and 30 ECTS credits from the “Preparation for the Ph.D. Qualification Exam” study, while the remaining 120 ECTS credits should be earned from the thesis studies. The student should be qualified as successful by the jury in the defense examination of the thesis. All rules and requirements related to Ph.D. degree qualification, including to succeed a course and required cumulative grade point average, are governed by the “Hacettepe University Graduate Study, Education and Examination Regulations” and related decisions of Hacettepe University Senate.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Students who have successfully completed at least one semester in Ph.D. programs of other universities or higher education institutes can apply for a transfer to the Ph.D. program of the Geomatics Engineering Department, Hacettepe University. The acceptance requirements of the applications and other rules and requirements including adaptation terms are stated in the “Hacettepe University Graduate Study, Education and Examination Regulations”.

The main objectives of the Ph.D. program are to educate engineers and scientists equipped with: the ability of carrying out scientific research projects in geomatics discipline; the competence of using and developing state-of-the art technologies; the adequacy to answer the fundamental scientific and industrial demands at national and international levels; social and environmental awareness; and the skills of creative and critical thinking.

Graduates of the program can be employed in many public institutions, particularly in; Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Land Registry and Cadaster, Iller Bank Inc., General Directorate of Highways, General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, Municipalities and Special Provincial Administrations. Besides, graduates are employed in research and development departments of private companies operating in construction, energy, utility and mining sectors. In addition, they can work in research institutions such as The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey and Turkish Space Agency (planned to be established), and national or foreign universities.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The language of instruction for the PhD Program in Geomatics Engineering is English. The structure for the program is established based on the principles provided in “Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination”.

The program consists of compulsory and elective courses, PhD qualification exam, thesis proposal, thesis study and thesis defense exam. Students are required to complete 240 ECTS credits in total. These include a course load of minimum 80 ECTS credits to be completed by taking at least 8 elective courses, the “Seminar” course of 10 ECTS credits, the “Preparation for the PhD Qualification Exam” study of 30 ECTS credits, and thesis study (“Special Topics”) of 120 ECTS credits. 1 ECTS credit stands for a work load of 30 hours.

All courses within the program except “Seminar”, “Preparation for the PhD Qualification Exam”, and “Special Topics” are in elective status. The 80 ECTS credits which should be completed with elective courses corresponds to 89% of the total coarse load of 90 ECTS credits.

Students who complete the course load successfully and fulfill the CGPA requirement stated in “Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination” can take the PhD qualification exam. Besides the PhD qualification exam, students are required to successfully complete the thesis work and thesis defense exam in compliance with the Regulations mentioned above.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

In order to earn the Ph.D. degree, students are required to:

- Complete 240 ECTS credits in total, of which 90 ECTS credits should be completed from compulsory and elective courses, 30 ECTS credits from the “preparation for the Ph.D. qualification exam” study, and 120 ECTS credits from the thesis studies,

- Be successful in the Ph.D. qualification exam,

- Be qualified as successful by the thesis jury in the defense examination of the thesis.

All rules and requirements related to Ph.D. degree qualification, including to succeed a course and required cumulative grade point average, are governed by the “Hacettepe University Graduate Study, Education and Examination Regulations” and related decisions of Hacettepe University Senate.
