D.1. General Information about Program

Department of Medical Education & Informatics was founded in 2000. The main activity areas of the department are education and research. There are routine works on program development, student assessment and program evaluation in medical school. The department has lectures in the first three years of medical school, and in the first two years of dentistry school. Good Medical Practice, Patient Safety and Interprofessional Education, Becoming a Physician and Medicine and Social Responsibility programs have been developed, organized and conducted by the Department of  Medical Education and Informatics. Masters Degree program was implemented in 2004. In the 2015-2016 academic year, students started to be admitted to the doctoral program.

It is required to train the manpower that will conduct academic studies and research in the departments of medical education and informatics established in Turkish medical faculties, and will contribute the development of medical education in our country like the international area. These programs are founded and conducted for the special and specific needs of education and evaluation in medicine. These programs also contribute to the training of manpower in the field of instruction in dentistry, nursing and pharmacy.

Each academic year, 3-6 new students are admitted to the doctorate program.

Internship practice is not included in the program.

The courses in doctorate program of medical education are in Turkish, and there is no course in any foreign language.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

The applicant should;

be either a graduate of  MSc degree program in medical education, or a graduate of  a faculty of medicine with the requirement of completing the preparatory program,

 meet the application requirements of Hacettepe University Health Sciences Institute for graduate programs.

be successful in the oral exam by the faculty members of the Department of Medical Education and Informatics.

Those provisions are also valid for the international students.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Doctorate Programme, the student, who was accepted to the program with the master's degree, must complete total at least 240 ECTS; at least 21 credits and 90 ECTS's with at least seven courses, seminar, phd proposal and thesis work courses, except from ?Preparation To Doctoral Proficiency Exam? course, during the Phd study. (Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination). The minimum grade should be B3 for the courses, and the average score for the first two years should be 3.00 for proficiency exam.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

The students who completed successfully at least one semester at an equivalent program in a national institution or abroad can have the opportunity of the lateral transfer or the approval of the equivalent courses completed in a different institution. The applications are accepted in case of having appropriate quota, the student's meeting of the requirements, and having at least B3 for every course. The lateral transfer of a student or the approval of the courses are evaluated in the academic council of the department and the board of the institute.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The graduates of the doctorate degree program of medical education will be able to apply the knowkedge of the instructional principles and methods specifically to medical education, be able to develop a program specific to the medicine and health sciences, will be able to apply the measurement and evaluation methods and approaches specific to the field, will be able to plan, conduct and evaluate the results of an medical educational research, and produce new scientific approaches and methodologies in medical education.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates of this program can work as experts in the departments or units of medical education established in medical schools. They can also work in simulation centers or measurement and assessment centers as experts in the field of education, research and evaluation. They can also work as expert/consultant to the NGOs for the development, conduct and evaluation of educational programs. They can work in the centers founded at health sciences schools.

D.13. Access to Further Studies

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The courses in the program are semester based. In the first three semesters of the program, students should complete the must/elective courses. They may include lectures and practical sessions. courses are mostly lecture based, the last year covering the thesis has practical activities as well. Minimum 240 ECTS should be gathered in order to graduate from the program. 1 ECTS corresponds 30 hours student workload. In the first four semesters, 42% of the courses are electives. Elective courses are included in all semesters to meet the students' interest areas. Students can choose courses from the university's other programs or even from other universities after consultant's approval. Students can choose the seminar after completing all must courses.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Examination regulations and grading for each course is given in ‘Assesment Methods' part of the Course Plan. The related rules of ‘Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination' will be applied.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

Students are required to be successful in must/elective courses and take a proficiency exam in order to proceed to PhD thesis. At the end of fourth year, students need to be successful in the thesis defence exam. 29 credits (240 ECTS credits) are required for graduation (Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination).
