BIOINFORMATICS
Second Cycle Programmes
(Master's Degree)

D.1. General Information about Program

Back

The bioinformatics specialist upon graduation from this program, will have deep biological knowledge. As well it is expected that he/she will also have a systematical statistical analysis logic. This analytical logic will be helpful, not only in the researches which the specialist designs the experiment himself, but also in accessing the researches from original databases. He/she will be capable of testing bioinformatic analysis models on such databases and conducting preprocessing steps such as, missing data analysis and outlier detection, on the data he/she is going to use. He/she has enough knowledge necessary for deciding which methods (classification, clustering) will be used in which situations on data ready for analysis. He/she will be able to compare different methods which can be used for different data types with different performance criteria such as area under the ROC curve or true classification rate. He/she can compare his/her findings with the relevant literature and interpret the results. Candidates will be open to all opinions and will have positive and responsive approach.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

Back

Treatment of diseases, new drug discovery and disease prevention-oriented projects are increasing the importance of genetic data. In our country, the spread of bio-banks and increase in the resources allocated to genetic studies have led a significant progress in this field. Discovery of new genes and treatments are just a few of them. In order to achieve success in the projects carried out by our scientists and results of these projects to have a direct effect on patients, extraction of information from genetic research is required. Therefore, in our country the need for bioinformatics experts is increasing. It is clear that correct treatment regimens can be found with experts who dominate biological information and who know how to choose the appropriate analysis method.

From the start of the Human Genome Project in 1990, to the mapping of human genome in 2003, very little was known about human genome, however it can be mapped more quickly through the processes developed in recent years. The aim in medical sciences, where the genetic data is gathered rapidly, is to analyze this data in a correct, quick and presentable manner. The need for analysis methods was first tried to be eliminated by using conventional statistical methods. However, these methods require many assumptions and are not adequate for the analysis of the data as used for the complex structure, such as the human genome and alternative methods have been sought. Bioinformatics methods have addressed this need. With this new approach new solutions have been proposed to many problems that cannot be explained. The most important deficiency in our country in the field of bioinformatics is the inadequacy of researchers who have basic biological knowledge together with the analysis logic. For this reason the results of some studies cannot be adequately interpreted. As is known this type of genetic, and biological study is very costly. In our country, the resources allocated to these activities are wasted due to lack of bioinformatics specialists who will interpret the results. For this reason, by the opening of the proposed graduate program, experts who have analysis skills and medical knowledge will be trained. These experts, both in the academic environment as well as in the private sector, are expected to contribute to the researches. Through this program, students who are expected to carry out researches, in an educational environment are equipped with very different approaches. This will enable bioinformatics results to be presented in a very understandable manner and in a standardized fashion. Finally this will lead highly competitive bioinformatics researches in the international arena.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Back

The program is planned to be completed in at least four semesters. The first two semesters are referred to as course training period while the last two semesters as thesis period. The courses included in the program are: compulsory courses with 36 ECTS, selective courses with 24 ECTS and thesis work with 60 ECTS. 1 ECTS corresponds to 30 hours of workload. In the first two semesters; compulsory and elective courses should be completed to make a total of 60 ECTS. 60% of total 60 ECTS credits are compulsory courses, the rest 40% are elective courses. All elective courses, could be selected from the program courses.
