D.1. General Information about Program

Hacettepe University Institute of Population Studies Demography Doctorate Programme is the combination of Economic and Social Demography and Technical Demography programmes -two programmes that provide doctoral education in the field of demography/population studies in Turkey- since 1968 according to current needs and the goals of the Institute of Population Studies.

The medium of instruction is English.

In the doctoral programme, it is aimed to provide education on the basic components of the population such as birth, death and migration, as well as on the subjects concerning the population such as research techniques and health. There is a Scientific Preparation programme in the programme for students who have not graduated from the Demography Master's programme.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

Candidates who have completed their master's programs can apply to the Demography PhD program.

  • Their Master's degree diploma or an approved temporary graduation certificate
  • An academic transcript of their Bachelor's and Master's degree
  • A document of their ALES score (Minimum 65, equally weighted verbal and quantitative score, international students may submit their GMAT -minimum 485- or GRE scores -minimum 151-)
  • A document of their YDS/YÖKDÄ°L or another equivalent language exam score accepted by the Interuniversity Council (For YDS/YÖKDÄ°L a score of minimum 75, for TOEFL IBT a score of minimum 90 is needed)
  • Two head shot photos
  • A copy of their ID cards (or equivalent document)
  • A letter of intent
  • Two academic letters of recommendation from two instructors who are familiar the applicant's education.

International students are expected to provide additional documents such as:

  • An education visa
  • A passport that is valid at the application date instead of a copy of their ID cards
  • A residence permit

Admission of foreign students to the program is decided after the necessary documents are received and evaluated by the Institute of Population Studies.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

A total of 240 ECTS (21 national credits of courses and special subjects courses taken during the thesis period) must be completed in order to obtain a PhD in Demography. The program consists of 8 semesters in total, the first three semesters of which are courses, and the fourth semester is followed by thesis periods. Before starting the thesis study, 120 ECTS (21 national credits) courses must be completed and the PhD qualifying exam must be passed.

The minimum grade required to be successful (to complete the course) is B3 (2.75 out of 4 or 70-74 out of 100) and the weighted grade point average must be B2 (3.00 out of 4 or 75-79 out of 100) in order to graduate. (Hacettepe University Graduate Education Regulations Article 26 and Article 27).

In order to receive a degree from the Demography Doctorate Program, in addition to the compulsory courses in the course list, it is necessary to take the elective courses to fill the minimum credits requirement, to be successful in the PhD qualifying exam and to complete the doctoral thesis.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of the education received by a student who has previously studied at another higher education institution in the country or abroad, exchange programs and the previous education of a student who has studied at another higher education institution for a certain period of time, by the Demography doctorate program, credit transfer when necessary, evaluation of lateral transfer applications are made in accordance with Hacettepe University Graduate Education Regulations (Article 16 and Article 21).

With the doctorate program, it is aimed to provide education in order to contribute to social, economic and scientific development, to ensure the production, use and dissemination of demographic data and information, to raise awareness and sensitivity on population issues, and to support policy development and implementation on population issues.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The alumni of the program are potential employees of government agencies such as Turkish Statistical Institute, Presidency of Strategy and Budget, General Directorate of Population and Civil Affairs, and Development Agencies, as well as private institutions specialised in research and international institutions. The fact that the medium of instruction is English facilitates pursuing a career abroad or in international institutions.

The proportion of must courses is 61.5% and the proportion of elective courses is 38.5% in the program. Students are free to take elective courses from other departments with the approval of their advisors. In order to accept a course from another program as a must course; a procedure similar to that in item f is followed, in line with the Hacettepe University Graduate Education Regulations (Items 16 and 21). The classes offered at the department of Demography are semester courses.

f.      The structure of the program in terms of years: The students must successfully complete at least 13 courses, 8 of which are compulsory and 5 are elective, in the first four semesters of the program. The students who are preparing for the doctoral proficiency exam in the fourth semester take 4 more courses for thesis preparation from the fifth semester onwards, after successfully passing the proficiency exam. The doctoral candidates, who start their thesis studies under the supervision of their academic advisor, are qualified to receive their doctorate degree after successfully defending their thesis.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

In order to receive the PhD degree in Demography, students must have completed a total of 240 ECTS (21 national credit courses and special subjects courses taken during the thesis period) within 4 academic years. In addition to the courses taken, students must be successful in the doctoral proficiency exam, complete their doctoral thesis and successfully defend their thesis.
