The basic philosophy of Department of Music Theories is to provide music theorists with the ability of examining areas of Turkish Music Theory and Western Music Theory through a "holistic" perspective. Master of Science Program (with thesis) in Music Theories is also grounded on the same approach. In this context, both in relation to Turkish Music Theory and Western Music Theory; a curriculum which is classified under the titles of sound systems, sound organization, analysis, and history of theory is created.

Students who have Bachelors Degree, get at least 55 points from YDS or YÖKDİL (or from one of the other foreign language examinations which is accepted by The Interuniversity Council to be equivalent ) and pass the admittance exam given by the Department of Music Theories are accepted for the Program. For international students, the conditions laid down by Hacettepe University for acceptance of foreign students are applied (http://www.hacettepe.edu.tr/Eklenti/1235,hulisansustuogrvesinavyonetmelik231112.pdf?0).
Students who collect at least the sum of 24 national and 120 ECTS credits, succeed the Seminar and other courses and whose thesis is considered to be successful in the Thesis Defence examination, gain the right for graduating from the Program.

The aim of the Program is; to educate music theorists who has the objectivism and scientific compatibility to be able to examine Turkish Music Theory and Western Music Theory from a holistic vantage point and who adopts all accomplishments of ethics of science in their studies.
Graduates of the Program can take part as faculty members at the universities or as music theorists in the other establishments belonging to the government or private sector.

The program includes a total of 11 national credits of four compulsory courses including Special Topics, Schenker Analysis: Basic Concepts, Introduction to Maqam Analysis, Research Methods and Publication Ethics and Seminar. In order to graduate, the students are required to collect at least 24 national credits and at least 13 of these should belong to the elective courses.
The program contains totally 120 ECTS credits. 90 ECTS credits belong to the compulsory lectures and 30 ECTS credits belong to the elective courses. Maximum 15 of the 30 ECTS credits mentioned above can be taken from fields other than Music Theories.
