ONE HEALTH
Second Cycle Programmes
(Master's Degree)

D.1. General Information about Program

Back

The one health approach started with practical arrangements to improve or protect animal and human health. The term "zoonosis", which was first put forward in 1855 with the studies conducted with the Trichinella parasite, provided the first link between human and animal infections. Despite the developments in modern medicine and the improvements in living standards in the 21st century, the inadequacy against health problems all over the world has led the scientific world to seek a different solution. In this context, it was recommended to gather "Human Medicine" and "Veterinary Medicine" under a single roof, and steps of a one health approach were taken. As of 2008, the terms "One Health" have been used in the literature. Although there are many definitions, the definition adopted by the United States of America (USA) Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is as follows; One Health is a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary approach?working at the local, regional, national, and global levels?with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment. Scope in one health approach;

i) disease transitions between species,

ii) integration of wildlife disease monitoring and related control strategies,

iii) comparative research on non-communicable diseases affecting humans and animals (eg diabetes, cancer, autoimmune diseases and obesity),

iv) development of diagnostic methods for emerging / potential diseases

v) adoption of multidisciplinary approaches and raising public awareness in drug and vaccine studies on treatment and protection.

Today, adoption of a one health concept provides a new and holistic perspective to human, animal and environmental health through comparative and multidisciplinary studies. This approach is also adapted to educational activities, emphasizing the natural interactions of these different disciplines with each other in health and science education. In this context, it is possible to obtain a Master's and Doctorate degree in one of the world's leading developed countries at the moment.

As a result, having one health in Hacettepe University as a medical graduate program, will be the first step in Turkey and qualifications will be harmonized with the current education system in the world. The related program will provide education by faculty members from different disciplines, and will enable innovative multidisciplinary research and thesis projects. In this direction, students will have the opportunity to increase their knowledge and experience by establishing partnerships with other international education centers.
