D.1. General Information about Program

Exercise and Sport Physiology Doctorate Program is carried out under the Department of Exercise and Sport Physiology, Hacettepe University Institute of Health Sciences. Exercise and Sport Physiology is one of the main areas of study of Exercise and Sport Sciences which examines acute and chronic responses to physical activity, exercise and sports. In this framework, Exercise and Sport Physiology is a discipline that examines the acute responses of physiological systems and how they adapt to physical activity and exercise, and how they interact with different nutritional strategies and ergogenic aids at the molecular, cellular, tissue, organ and whole body level in maintaining a healthy life and improving exercise/sports performance. Master's students can specialize in exercise and sports physiology, exercise biochemistry, and exercise nutrition and metabolism.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

PhD applicants eligible for admission into the Exercise and Sport Physiology Programme must meet the admission requirements of Hacettepe University, Graduate School of Health Sciences and must be successful in the enterance exam.

  • To meet the application requirements of Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations and Institute of Health Sciences.
  • Have earned a bachelor degree from the Faculty of Medicine or Pharmacy
  • Have earned a master of science degree with a thesis in Sport Sciences, Physiology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Medical Biology, Genetics,  Anatomy, Food Engineering, Biophysics, Pharmacology, Chemistry or Chemistry Engineering, 
  • For applications other than the above, to have a master of science degree approved by the Academic Board of the Department of Exercise and Sport Physiology.
  • To have at least the minimum Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES-SCIE/EW) or foreign language scores approved by Graduate School of Health Sciences Board and Hacettepe University Senate. (ALES-Foreign Language Scores Table). 
  • For candidates whose bachelor degree or master of science degree earned from the programs other than Sports Sciences take the courses determined by the Academic Board of the Department within the scope of the Scientific Preparation Program defined by Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations and successfully complete their exams.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Programme Requirements: The students studying in this program are required:

  • To be succeded in a minimum of 7 courses and a seminar (with at least 21 national course credits and 90 ECTS),  Preparation to Doctoral Proficiency Exam and complete a Doctoral Thesis (with 120 ECTS).
  • To succeed in all the courses with a letter grade of at least B2.
  • To have a Cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 3.00/4.00 with a minimum of 240 ECTS credits.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

If the content of course previously taken in another institution which is equivalent to the course offered at Hacettepe University, then the student can be exempted from this course with the approval of the Institute of Health Sciences after the evaluation of the course content. Those who have BS in fields other than Sport and Movement Sciences may take a complimentary course.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The aim is to train qualified researchers and academicians who; have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out and evaluate studies in the field of exercise and sports physiology, equipped with educational skills to transfer their competencies to young scientists, whose literature knowledge and application skills on at least one research topic have reached a universal level, are capable of leading multi-disciplinary teams, able to plan and carry out scientific researches that will elucidate the physiological mechanism by which physical activity and exercise improves health as well as sports performance, can transmit the research findings for the benefit of science and humanity, produce new knowledge, have the ethical and social qualities of a universal scientist, contribute to public health, national economy and universal science.


D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Those who successfuly complete PhD Programme specializing in either Exercise Biochemistry, Exercise Physiology, Sports Nutrition and Metabolism is rewarded PhD Degree in Exercise and Sport Physiology.

Graduates may either continue on their academic studies in national or international universities as postdoc, faculty member or go for a job in private or state foundations where Sport and Movement Science is used or developed.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

PhD program in Exercise and Sport Physiology is composed of 4 semesters. Pre-requisites for the courses are provided in the course syllabus in the Programme Information Package. To graduate from this programme student has to get at least 240 ECTS. This credit load includes the credits of Doctorate Thesis which is compulsory.
