D.1. General Information about Program

The Division of Turkish Studies was founded within the institute as approved by the Executive Council of Higher Education Council on January 29, 2004 and since then the institute operates in offering graduate studies. The aim of the non-thesis program in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language under the framework of the Division of Turkish Studies is to train academicians to teach Turkish as a foreign language, who are equipped with the necessary field knowledge, skills, and attitudes, has progressive ideas and ethical values, and who will contribute to language teaching and training teachers in the related field.

The medium of instruction of the non-thesis program in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language is Turkish. This program consists of such disciplines as language, linguistics, culture, literature, the historical development of foreign language education and especially language teaching. The program provides students with information and skills on language acquisition, applied linguistics, the interaction of language and culture, literature, language skills, materials development and adaptation to teach language skills at various levels and age groups, testing and assessment, designing syllabus according to the needs and expectations of students, and especially training teachers of this specific field. Students in this program not only acquires information but also make scientific studies such as writing articles, present orally in conferences, seminars, symposiums, and participate in various projects.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

The requirements for admission to graduate programs are determined by “Hacettepe University Regulations for Graduate Studies” and regulations of each division. Those who earns a B.A. Degree from any “Language Teaching Divisions” or an equivalent degree (Language and Literature, Linguistics, Interpretation and Translation, etc.) can apply. It is a must that they have a 60% GPA of the total score of undergraduate study (B.A.) and have 60 points in Academic Staff and Graduate Studies Entrance Exam (ALES). The certificate of GRE over at least 600 and GMAT over at least 500 is regarded to be equal with Academic Staff and Graduate Studies Entrance Exam (ALES) score.

It is obligatory that students enrolled in M.A. in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language are to take undergraduate courses at least 30 credits and successfully defend the project in front of a committee in order to graduate.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

To have a B.A. Degree approved by the head of related division/art division or stated in the regulations of the related division/art division and by the board of the institute.

The ultimate aim of this program is to teach Turkish as a foreign language both at home and abroad, utilizing scientific methods and interdisciplinary approaches. For this purpose, it is aimed to equip the candidates with the most effective approaches, methods, and techniques in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Students who successfully graduate from the program,

  1. develops a holistic approach to the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language,
  2. gains the methodology in the field of teaching Turkish as a foreign language to construct knowledge parallel to the method and the findings in the World,
  3. for the studies in teaching Turkish as a foreign language from the past to present read at least one of the necessary sources, comprehend, analyze, and construct and interpret the new knowledge to contribute to the universal knowledge,
  4. relying on the experiences above, is equipped with the ability to successfully perform academic studies, does teaching, and perform similar occupations.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The non-thesis M.A. program in “Teaching of Turkish as a Foreign Language” is a night program. The students who are enrolled in the program are to pay a fee approved by the Board of the Institute of Turkish studies. 90% of the courses offered in the program are elective and the rest 10% are compulsory. The students who successfully complete the required courses (credits) are to carry out a major project in the field.

Students have to attend courses coded and fulfill minimum requirements for success. These include attendance, presentations, assignments and passing grade for exams.
