D.1. General Information about Program

The Master's Program with thesis of Women and Gender Studies came into effect in the 2012-2013 academic years.

The Master's program of Women and Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary program that covers notably the Sociology department and other disciplines such as Philosophy, Economics, Political Science and Public Administration, Public Health, Nursing, and Medical Ethics.

Faculty members within the Sociology department and from the aforementioned departments carry out the Master's program of Women and Gender Studies. The medium of instruction of this program is Turkish.

The Master's program of Women and Gender Studies is in close cooperation with various research centres of our university such as the Human Rights and Philosophy Research and Implementation Centre, Women's Research and Implementation Centre, and Youth Research and Implementation Centre.

Students accepted to the program may use the university's facilities such as the library and the computer centre.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

1. Applicants who apply to the program must have completed a four-year Bachelor's Degree with an average of at least 2.40 over 4.00 (four).

2. Candidates must receive minimum 60 standard score in one of the verbal or equally-weighted scores from Academic Staff and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) which has been done by Evaluation, Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) or international exams such as GRE and GMAT whose equivalence are approved by the Hacettepe University Senate.

3. Applicants are required to score at least 60 in the Foreign Knowledge in Foreign Language Placement Examination (Yabancı Dil Seviye Tespit Sınavı, YDS). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score from other foreign language examinations, held at the national or international level, whose equivalence is approved by ÖSYM.

4. International students' applications are accepted in line within “Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).

5. With the suggestion of the admission committee of the department, the applicants may be required to attend one-year preparatory program or take some courses from bachelor's, preparatory or graduate programs.

6. Those conditions, which are not included, are applied in accordance with the related provisions of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations (Hacettepe Üniversitesi Lisansüst Eğitim, Öğretim ve Sınav Yönetmeliği).

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Upon the completion the program successfully; the students achieve a Master's Degree in Women and Gender Studies.

A student enrolled to The Master's Program with thesis of Women and Gender Studies should successfully complete 4 compulsory courses (one of which is a seminar course) and 4 elective courses and all of these 8 courses should be of at least 24 credits (60 ECTS). The student should also write a thesis and should successfully defend the thesis in front of a jury (60 ECTS). %47 of the total 120 ECTS is from elective courses and % 53 is from compulsory courses. 1 ECTS is equal to 25 hours student workload.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Courses succeeded prior to the student's lateral transfer from another higher education institute in or outside of Turkey to the Women and Gender Studies shall be approved as equivalent according to their contents by the academic board of the department as long as the student applies for such approval within the timeframe announced on the academic calendar.

This process is carried out according to Hacettepe University's Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination is applied for specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The Master's Program of Women and Gender Studies aims to train researches and experts who are equipped with information, skills, and competence related to women and gender, who protects the benefits of the society, who is creative and can think critically, who is sensitive to the ethical principles, who will make an effort to resolve problems rising from gender structures and inequalities within the fields they are working, and who will play an active role in participating to develop and apply social political suggestions.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Those that have graduated from the Master's Program of Women and Gender Studies achieve the title “Master of Science”.

Graduates of the program may take part directly or indirectly in issues of women and gender in fields of activity such as the Ministry of Family and Social Politics, General Directorate of Women's Status, Social Services and Child Protection Agency, Turkish Statistical Institution, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labour, and Social Security or in public organizations, local administrations, development agencies, or in international establishments such as the Turkish representatives of the United Nations, the Turkish Delegation of the European Union, embassies interested in the area and international civil organizations. In addition, they may also work as academicians in universities.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The Master?s Program of Women and Gender Studies consists of 4 semesters. The program consists of 4 compulsory courses, one of which is a seminar course. 50% of the program courses consist of elective courses. 

The students are required to complete their courses successfully by the end of the two semester the latest. From the beginning of the third semester begin their thesis studies by selecting SOS 600 Special Topics and by determining their thesis advisor.
