Masters Programme for Department of Musicology started education in 1994 with the name of “Masters Programme for Ethnomusicology and Folklore”, under Hacettepe University, Institute of Social Sciences and first students were graduated in 1998.
In 2012, the name of the programme was changed as “Masters Programme for Department of Musicology”.
Masters Programme for Department of Musicology, gives training in all sub-disciplines of musicology with modern methods and techniques, follows closely the current international studies and continues to contribute to academic knowledge by means of scientific publications.

Students will not be accepted from 2017- 2018 Academic year Fall semester.
The minimum sum of credits required to be achieved in order to be able to graduate from the Masters Programme for Department of Musicology is 24 and 120 for national and ECTS credits respectively. 12 national credits of the programme is to be collected from the obligatory courses. The remaining (minimum) 12 national credits are to be collected from the courses under one of the subdivisions of; Historical Musicology, Ethnomusicology and Systematic Musicology. In order to graduate from the programme, it is also required that the thesis prepared by the students should pass through the Thesis Defense Examination. The subdivision selected by the student is specified in the appendix of the diploma.

The purpose of Musicology Masters Programme is to educate musicologists to take part in music and music education and scientific research institutions who is equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes related to the subdivisions of Historical Musicology, Ethnomusicology and Systematic Musicology, who has absorbed the ethics of science, closely follow the developments in their field and contribute to these developments by their studies in the scientific, technological, visual and auditory areas, who is respectful, participatory, open to innovations and developments and with a high level of aesthetic appreciation and vision.
Graduates of this programme can work as academics in higher education institutions and as experts in the fields of Historical Musicology, Ethnomusicology and systematic Musicology in the state-owned art institutions such as the Presidential Symphony Orchestra, the State Opera and Ballet, the State Theatre, TRT and the Ministry of Culture or in the private sector art institutions.

This program includes a total of 12 national credits of compulsory fundamental core lectures including the Special Topics and the Seminar. In order to graduate, the student is required to collect at least 24 national credits and 12 of these national credits should belong to the elective courses in one of the subdivisions of musicology selected by the student.
The programme contains totally 120 ECTS credits. 90 ECTS credits belong to the compulsory lectures and 30 ECTS credits belong to the elective courses.

In order to graduate from this program, in addition to the conditions for graduation referred to in related articles of Graduate Degree Education and Examination Regulation of Hacettepe University, it is required to obtain the lowest total of 24 national credits and a total sum of 120 ECTS credits and all of the compulsory core lectures, Seminar and the elective courses related to the selected subdivision of musicology and the thesis prepared should be successfull.
