D.1. General Information about Program

 Family and Consumer Sciences Department was established under the title of Home Management and Family Economics in 1968, as part of Hacettepe University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Home Economics School. In line with similar programs in the world, the department's name was changed as Home Economics in 1999, and as Family and Consumer Sciences in 2005, and it was attached to Hacettepe University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences in 2006.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Department Master's Program has been carried out under the Faculty of Health Sciences until 1983, under the Health Sciences Institute between 1984-2006, and under the Social Sciences Institute since 2007. In principle, Master's Program is carried out with an interdisciplinary approach. Within the scope of our department, studies are carried out to achieve the desired quality of life for the individual, family and society by following the scientific literature in the field. In line with this goal, Master's Program aims to analyze the socio-demographic, economic, cultural, psycho-social and social characteristics of individuals and families, to determine their problems and needs, and to increase the quality of life by taking into account the available human and material resources according to the results obtained. Its mission is to develop proposals.

The main goal of the program is to provide students with the criteria and academic style that graduates will use when preparing reports, analyzes and studies in the future. Thus, students who intend to further their academic studies will have acquired the basic method knowledge that they will use in their doctoral studies. With the education given at the master's level, students are provided to critically evaluate the knowledge they have acquired in the field, to conduct academic research by examining the problems and needs at local, national and/or international levels from the perspective of the Family and Consumer Sciences field, and to take part in individual and team studies conducted by our department.

Although the language of instruction of the master's program is Turkish; in conducting academic studies and following the relevant literature, students use academic English and benefit from computer and statistical analysis methods

D.4. Provisions for Registration

  1. Master's program candidates who apply to the program must have completed a four-year Bachelor's Degree in Family and Consumer Science or other departments. However, applicants who are accepted to the program other than Family and Consumer Sciences undergraduates are required to take a maximum of 5 courses from the undergraduate curriculum determined within the framework of the scientific preparation program, with the recommendation of the examination jury and the opinion of the Academic Board of the Department, if deemed necessary. Courses taken within the scope of the scientific preparation program are not counted towards the credit and ECTS load of the courses stipulated by the master's program. In order for students to start their Master's Program, they must pass each scientific preparation course successfully (at least C1 grade).
  2. Candidates are required to score at least 55 standard points from equal weight categories of the Academic Staff and Graduate Education Examination (Akademik Personel ve Lisansüstü Eğitimine Giriş Sınavı, ALES) organized by Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (Ölçme, Seçme ve Yerleştirme Merkezi, ÖSYM). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score, determined by the Hacettepe University Senate, in the internationally recognized GRE and GMAT examinations.
  3. Candidates are required to score at least 55 in the Foreign Knowledge in Foreign Language Placement Examination (YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score from other foreign language examinations, held at the national or international level, whose equivalence is approved by OSYM.

4.         In order to be accepted to the program, the success ranking of the candidates is made by calculating 50% of the ALES score, 20% of the graduate graduation grade, 30% of the entrance exam grade. Candidates who score 50 points in the entrance exam are considered successful. The Entrance Exam is given by the faculty members of the department, verbally and/or in writing.


5.         International students' applications are accepted in line within "Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).

6.         Those conditions, which are not included, are applied in accordance with the related provisions of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations (Hacettepe Üniversitesi Lisansüst Eğitim, Öğretim ve Sınav Yönetmeliği).


Application Special Condition: 


Candidates who meet the above application requirements are taken to the program entrance exam. Candidates who get the minimum score determined by the Department in exam are considered successful. The ranking of successful candidates is made by the examination jury according to the overall success grade.

The provisions not included above will be applied in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Master's program with thesis, at least 21 national credits and at least 60 ECTS credits, at least seven courses, one seminar course and 60 ECTS thesis work. It consists of a total of 120 ECTS credits.


In order to pass a course, graduate students must get at least a grade of C1.


Students who successfully complete the courses in the master's curriculum worth a total of 120 ECTS, achieve a weighted grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.50 out of 4.00 and succeed in the defense exam of the thesis they have prepared in their field will receive the Master's Degree.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning in the Family and Consumer Sciences Program is in the form of recognition of courses taken in the special student status, receiving course equivalence from another enrolled program and recognition of completed credits in the process of transfer between programs within the rules determined by the Institute of Social Sciences.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The aim of our Master's program is to enable our students to obtain the title of science specialization in a specific field within the Family and Consumer Sciences multidisciplinary. In addition, it is to enable students to have scientific thinking and to gain academic writing skills.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Family and Consumer Sciences Master's Program consists of 4 semesters. In order to graduate, the student must complete a total of 120 ECTS, 60 ECTS from courses and 60 ECTS from thesis work. In the curriculum, IST 665 Statistical Analysis for Social Sciences, ATB 649 Seminar and ATB 690 Ethics in Research and Publication are compulsory courses.


Of the 60 ECTS to be taken from the courses, 20 must be taken from compulsory courses and 40 from elective courses.


At most two of the courses to be taken by the graduate student can be selected from the undergraduate courses, provided that they were not taken during the undergraduate education.

Quantification and assessment procedures about each course are described inside each course's information package, "assessment methods" item, prepared by the related faculty members. Regarding exams and course grades, the related articles of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations are applied.
