Family and Consumer Sciences Department was established under the title of Home Management and Family Economics in 1968, as part of Hacettepe University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Home Economics School. In line with similar programs in the world, the department's name was changed as Home Economics in 1999, and as Family and Consumer Sciences in 2005, and it was attached to Hacettepe University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences in 2006.
It is widely acknowledged that particularly in recent years, because of macroeconomic, technological, and social developments, changes, and interactions in societies, the importance of research on family and consumer sciences has been increasing. One is to educate individuals who will know, understand, and evaluate macroeconomic, technological, and social developments, changes, and interactions in societies, contribute to individuals and families' life quality and to service quality of institutions, and work hard towards the active protection of consumers and making them conscious. The other one is to contribute to the society and families through these individuals' work within the fields of research, education, and services. The medium of instruction is Turkish.
