D.1. General Information about Program

Back

There is an increase in child abuse and neglect cases in all over the world, which can be defined as conduct, acts, and failure to acts that results in harm or threat of harm to the child's physical , mental and social health by those responsible for the health, care and protection of the child.

· Most child abuse and neglect cases admitting to emergency departments are misdiagnosed or accepted as accidental injuries. This is mostly due to lack of training of health personnel for recognition of the clues to make the correct diagnosis.

· Those who are not diagnosed and receive appropriate management may be at greater risk of having repeated severe trauma which may result in death.

· Most perpetrators are also the victims of child abuse during their childhood. Therefore, the vicious cycle of abuse if not prevented is likely to be transferred from one generation to another.

· Convulsions, hydrocephalus, ataxia, decrease in IQ , learning disabilities, running away , suicide, and criminal tendencies, alcohol, drug addiction, violent antisocial personality , depression, are the most common complications in the long term. Therefore, physicians who are knowledgeable and practicing in the management of child abuse and neglect cases are needed to prevent further harm and the long term complications.

· Abused and neglected cases require a multidisciplinary team approach including pediatricians, child, adolescent and adult psychiatrics, specialists from forensic medicine, gynecology, orthopedics and traumatology , neurosurgery , pediatric surgery , social workers, etc. for the optimal treatment, planning the most appropriate care as well as preparing the legal report within the frame of the best interest of the child.
