D.1. General Information about Program

Back

Master program on pharmacognosy was in progress since 1972. Turkish is the official language of the program. In the beginning full program was covering the titles both in the pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Botany, however after the seperation of Pharmaceutical Botany Department from Pharmacognosy Department the master program was focused on pharmacognosy subjects. Nowadays the program is interested in nature-originated drugs and folk remedies under the following subtitles; isolation, derivatization and structural elucidation of the compounds obtained from natural sources; isolation of new compounds from nature; structure and activity relationships. For these purposes the following technical equipment are presents and actively used in our laboratory: Extractor, ultasonic bath, centrifuge equipment, HPLC, MPLC, Spectrophotometric equipments, CO2 incubator, Laminar flow cabinet, gel electrophoresis, microscopes, microbiological oven (37 °C), drying oven, liyophylizer, magnetic stirrer.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

The students are admitted to master?s degree program with interview exam. The number of students to be admitted to graduate programs and thequalifications of the candidates, will be announced befor the beginning of each semester. Application requirements and deadlines, interview exam place and exam date are being specified in this announcement. Pharmacy degree program (5 year) graduates, Pharmacognosy master?s graduates, candidates who receive in related sciences are accepted by the academic board of the Department of Pharmacognosy are accepted for the master?s degree program.

ALES certificate given by Student Selection and Placement Center (SSPC) with a mathematical score of at least 60 standard points or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) with at least 610points, or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) exam with the mathematical score of 475 points must be obtained. ALES certificate should not expiry three years.

Candidate must have a foreign language certificate (KPDS/UDS) or must complete an equivalent foreign language exam that has equivalency determined by the Board of Higher Education.  The minimum score required by the Senate of Hacettepe University for PhD students are at least 60 points for KPDS/UDS exam.

For a bachelor's degree received from another country, equivalence must be approved by the Council of Higher Education (CHE).

Before the deadline date, candidates who want to apply to this program must send following documents personally to the Institute of Health Sciences: ALES documents, undergraduate and /or graduate diploma or graduation certificate and a photocopy, other documents (photograph, photocopy of identification card, letters of reference (if requested, to be given to the department), the composition about the candidate's willingness to receive a master?s degree, stating the reasons and objectives.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The program consists of compulsory and elective courses with a total of 21 local credits (60 ECTS credits) and special subjects courses including a thesis study not less than 60 ECTS credits. The total ECTS credits of the program is 120. 1 ECTS is equivalent to 30 hours of workload. The student must take at least half of the total credits required by his / her program from his / her own program, even if he / she has credit transfer courses. If the advisor deems appropriate and necessary, they can also be selected from doctoral program courses. Students are required to put their results in writing in accordance with the Graduate School of Health Sciences Thesis Writing Guide, present them in front of the jury and defend them orally. Foreign students can prepare and present their thesis in English with the permission of the Health Sciences Institute Board. In the evaluation of students' course success and thesis defense exam results `H. Ü. Postgraduate Education and Examination Regulations are taken as basis.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

A student who is currently enrolled in a Master?s Degree program in related discipline at another institution and has successfully completed at least one semester, upon submitting all required documents before the deadline, he/she may transfer to the Master?s Degree Program to Hacettepe University. For the acceptance of applications, there must be master student quotas in relevant department, and the student must provide all admission requirements must be enrolled in the post-graduate program courses at least one semester and must receive a65 (C1) note at least..

Admissions of the graduate transfer students by the board of the department are be finalized by the board of directors.(Hacettepe University Master Education and Examination Regulations;

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The aim of the program is to give necessary scientific information to the students on nature originated crude drugs; natural sources and description of products obtained from natural sources, identification of their chemical compositions, isolation of active pure compounds, derivatization, structure elucidation, isolation of new compounds from nature and structure-activity relationship; and to train experts on pharmacognosy.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates as Pharmacognosy specialists may work as researchers, administrators and/or inspectors at the different levels of Ministry of Health; in reference laboratories of Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, at the research and development (R&D), quality control, production and licensing departments of drug industry especially for natural sources; and at the Pharmacognosy Departments of Faculty of Pharmacy.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

All courses are provided in both autumn and spring semesters. Requisite courses constitute 72% of the program (86 ECTS out of 120)(including thesis preparation courses), while elective courses constitute the remaining 28% (34 ECTS out of 120). Students are recommended to take the Biostatistics course from Hacettepe University, Institute of Health Sciences or other Institutes.For requisite courses, students have to take EFG 702 and EFG 703 courses from doctorate programmes and determined courses from master programme. For elective courses, students are free to take courses from Pharmacognosy master, doctorate program or other doctorate programs. All requisite and elective courses are listed in Course Structure Diagram. If necessary, doctorate students can take these courses in a different semester providing the requirements of total credit.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation and assessment methods for each course are defined by the information packages for each course in the program. In order to be successful in a graduate course, the student must receive at least C1 (65). H.U. As described in the part of “Qualification Requirements and Regulations”, the program consists of a total of 60 ECTS credits with the prerequisite of requisite and elective courses and 60 ECTS credits including thesis work and special topics courses. In total, the program consists of 120 ECTS credits. In order to get a Masters degree, the student must take The Research in MS Thesis course and must be successful in his/her thesis defense.
