D.1. General Information about Program

The Department of Translation and Interpreting was established in 1982 as the Department of English Translation and Interpreting. Subsequently, the Department of French was added in 1992 and the Department of German in 2007. In addition to the undergraduate programmes in English, French and German, the Department has offered a Master's programme in English Translation and Interpreting since 1991.

The PhD programme in English Translation and Interpreting is offered in Turkish and English. The quotas of students to be admitted to the programme are determined at the beginning of the semester by a decision of the Institute's Administrative Board upon the opinion of the relevant Head of Department.

The student writes his/her thesis in the language in which he/she has enrolled in the programme (English). However, with the approval of the Academic Board of the Department and the Institute of Social Sciences, the language of the thesis may be Turkish.

The thesis supervisor is chosen from among the members of the English Translation and Interpreting Faculty.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

Applicants must provide the following:

1) Applicants should have obtained their MA degrees. Either BA or MA degrees should be in the field of translation and interpretation, translation studies, linguistics, language and literature or foreign language education departments.

2) a BA GPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00 or 75 out of 100;

3) at least 70 in the national ALES exam;

4) at least 90 out of 100 in the national YDS English proficiency exam, or an equivalent grade in the other exams approved by YÖK;

5) International applicants must fulfill the requirements mentioned in HÜ Regulation and Senate.

6) The applicants with a BA and/or MA degree in a different field and/or university may be required to complete the academic preparatory program of maximum two semesters.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The students who successfully complete their studies in Translation and Interpreting (English) receive a PhD degree. It is required to satisfy the necessary conditions indicated in Hacettepe University Graduate Degree Academic Exam Regulations, article 43; and to successfully complete 240 ECTS of the departmental courses.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Applicants eligible to enroll in the PhD degree in Translation and Interpreting (English) are required to have completed their graduate studies with an M.A. degree or an equivalent program approved by YÖK.

Requirements for Horizontal Transfers and Inter-institutional Credit Transfers

For horizontal transfers to the PhD program and for inter-institutional credit transfers, the regulations of the Council of Higher Education of Turkey, HU Graduate Degree Academic Education and Exam Regulations, and the criteria specified by the Senate of Hacettepe University apply.

Requirements for Erasmus Academic Exchange Program

After student's stay at the host university for Erasmus Student Mobility Program is completed, s/he returns to the Department with a transcript indicating the courses and the grades received. These courses and grades are transferred to the grading system of Hacettepe University, considering the course equivalence table offered by the European Union Office. Upon approval by the Head of the Department, the course equivalence table is submitted to the relevant Institute. Following the approval of the documents by the Institute, they are recorded in the transcript, and thus procedures related to the student's return are completed.

The aim of the program is to train academicians urgently needed in our country to be employed as a lecturer and researcher at universities and colleges that train translators of foreign languages especially in English.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Ph. D. in Translation and Interpreting (English) Program is a minimum 4 year program. In order to graduate, students should complete departmental courses equivalent to 240 ECTS in total.

All doctoral courses are one-semester courses, and they may be offered any semester. There are no courses with pre-requisites in Ph. D. program.

The departmental Ph. D. courses are theoretical; however, through in-class activities and home assignments, the application of the knowledge acquired in the courses is intensively supported.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

In order to obtain Ph.D. degree in Translation and Interpreting (English) at Hacettepe University, students are required to comply with the valid Hacettepe University Graduate Degree Academic Exam Regulations; complete at least 240 ECTS of the departmental courses.
