D.1. General Information about Program

Early Childhood Education Program was established in the 1997-98 academic year as a part of Turkish Higher Education Council's teacher education restructuring efforts. Our program aims to train high quality early childhood teachers through its undergraduate program as well as offers master's and doctorate degrees for those who would like to further their education in the field.

*In order to ensure graduation requirements, students are required to take at least 40 ECTS credits of elective courses proposed by the department with ECE code.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

All undergraduate and graduate program graduates can apply. However, one year of scientific preparation is obligatory for those who are out of the field of Pre-School Education and Child Development.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The program consist of three following areas of study: Course load, qualification exam, and dissertation.

Phd students are required to successfully complete at least 90 ECTS credits course work and to be successful in qualifying exam which is held as both written and oral exam.

Candidates who successfully pass their qualifying exams must complete and defend a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of their academic advisors.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

In Turkish higher education institutions, rules and regulations for the recognition of prior formal education is governed by the Council of Higher Education's related by-laws. Limited transfer of credits may be made and a student can transfer to another program if the required conditions are met within the defined rules and regulations. Recognition of non-formal and informal education is at a very early stage and most likely will not be recognized by the Council of Higher Education.

The two primary aims of Early Childhood Education Program are:

1-      To train early childhood educators who : can utilize the latest developments in the field; believe democratic values; are a defender of human/children rights;  value personal differences; think critically and flexibly; can express her/himself freely; are creative,  intuitive and self-reflecting; believe in life-long learning; open to international, inter-discipliner collaboration; can effectively utilize information technologies;   respectful to the social and ecological environment she/he is living in.

2-      To offer graduate programs in order to assist researchers and non-academic specialists to improve their professional knowledge and skills.

Program graduates may be employed as academic personnel in varying ranks at public and private universities as well as research institutes and government agencies based on their qualifications.

Students who attend the program must complete 240 ECTS credits in order to graduate. 1 ECTS credit is equal to 30 hours of work load throughout the program.

Doctoral candidates must pass the qualifying exam which consist of both oral and written sections.

Candidates who successfully pass their qualifying exams must complete and defend a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of their academic advisors.

In order to be able to take the ECE 700.1, ECE 700.2, ECE 700.3, and ECE 700.4 Thesis courses, students must complete all the other coursework.

In order to be able to take the In order to be able to take the ECE 700.1, ECE 700.2, ECE 700.3, and ECE 700.4 Thesis courses, doctoral candidates must earn 120 ECTS credits.

Any student who leave the program more than three consecutive years (6 semesters) must re-complete all the course work before taking ECE 700.1, ECE 700.2, ECE 700.3, and ECE 700.4 Thesis courses.
