D.1. General Information about Program

The Department of Primary Education has started to teach on fall semester of 2004-2005 academic years.  The Primary Education Doctorate Program is a program with a thesis. Turkish is the primary language for education, however students are expected to have and adequate level of English to follow the international literature.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

Students who had successfully completed a 4-year undergraduate degree can apply for that program. Applicants need to meet Hacettepe University Educational Sciences Institute's criteria. For further information look at http://www.egitimbilimlerienstitusu.hacettepe.edu.tr/. The entrance exams are administered by each department based on Higher Education and exam regulations of Hacettepe University Institute of Educational Sciences. Candidates who had teaching experience and a master degree are preferable. Students who had accepted to the program may require taking 12 credit preliminary science courses if necessary.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Hacettepe University Institute of Educational Sciences exam regulations are applied. For further information look at http://www.egitimbilimlerienstitusu.hacettepe.edu.tr/yonetmelikler.html. The doctorate program consists of education courses, competency exam, and thesis defense. Students have to successfully take 24 credits (120 AKTS credit) and be successful on oral and written exam. Students who are successful on competency exam need to prepare and successfully defense a thesis under a control of an advisor in Special Subjects courses (120 ECTS).

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

In Turkish Higher Education Institutions recognition of formal learning vertical, parallel and within university transfers are carried out based on Higher Education Commission regulations. Under the condition of obeying these regulations limited number of credits can be transferred within departments and it may be possible for a student to continue his/her education in another department. Since recognition of informal education in Turkey is in its early phase it is not possible to recognize education experiences that are out of formal education.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The purpose of Primary Doctorate Program is preparing students to universities? education and research positions; preparing them to special schools, public schools and some units of Ministry of Education research, program, inspection and management duties and know scientific processes and have ethical and democratic values, creative, critical and analytical thinking, develop lifelong learning skills and environmentally friend and sensitive to social problems. 

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Primary education teaching and research staff of PhD graduates of universities, make take place in private schools, public schools and various departments of the Ministry of National Education for research, program, control and management positions with the title of doctor.

PhD Program in Primary Education takes 4 years. Thera are 16 courses in the program. In addition, in cases where needed Scientific Preparatory is composed of 9 courses. 58% of courses are compulsory and 42% of courses are elective in curriculum. Students may also choose elective courses from other enstitutes and departments.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

Hacettepe University Institute of Educational Sciences Graduate Education and Examination Regulations shall apply. Doctoral training courses consist of three parts, including qualifying, exam and dissertation defense. Students admitted to the program, at least 24 credits (120 ECTS) take and succesfully complate the courses;doctoral qualifying examination with an oral exam are required to be successful. Students who passed the qualifyinf exam, a consultant appointed by the department of the management to prepare a dissertation thesis examination must be successful in Special Subjects courses (120 ECTS).
