D.1. General Information about Program

To enter the PhD program of the department of Archaeology, candidates should graduate from one of the master's degree program of Prehistory, Protohistory and Near Eastern Archaeology, Classical Archaeology, History, History of Art, Anthropology, Ancient Languages and Cultures, Ancient History, Architecture, Restoration and Conservation, Archaeometry departments. The candidates have at least 2,75 general academic average out of 4,00 of a master's degree program.

Candidates must receive minimum 60 standard score in one of the quantitative, verbal or equally-weighted scores from Academic Staff and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) which has been done by Evaluation, Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) or international exams such as GRE and GMAT whose equivalence are approved by the Hacettepe University Senate and must receive minimum 60 score from Foreign Language Exam (YDS) or from one of the international or national exams whose equivalence and validity are approved by ÖSYM.

International student applications are considered in accordance with the 15.01.2014 date and 2014-28 decision of the University Senate as “Foreign Applicants to Graduate Programs Application and Admission Conditions of Hacettepe University Principles”.

Suitable candidates have to be successful in written and oral exam which includes archaeological knowledge, research methods and current development and perspectives in archaeology.

The provisions which are not covered above will be implemented in accordance with the relevant provisions of Hacettepe University's Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

1. Candidates who are accepted to register in the Archeology Master Program must have diplomas for get an equivalent education abroad whose equivalence are approved by the relevant institutions,

2. Receive minimum 60 standard score in one of the verbal or equally-weighted scores from Academic Staff and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) or international exams such as GRE and GMAT whose equivalence are approved by the Hacettepe University Senate,

3. Receive minimum 60 score from Foreign Language Exam (YDS) or from one of the international exams whose equivalence are approved by the University Senate.

4. The candidates have minimum 2,75 general academic average out of 4,00 of a master program.

5. International students' applications are accepted in line within “Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).

6. Candidates who fulfill the basic requirements will enter the written and oral exams to determine the level and currency of their knowledge. Among the candidates who are succed in the exams will be selected respect to the declared quota. The head of department and exam jury may ask the candidates to follow scientific preparation program who passed the scientific exam but did not complete undergraduate education at the anthropology field. The scientific preparation courses will be completed in one or two semesters.

7. Examination Regulation of Hacettepe University Graduate Education is used for the conditions which are not mentioned above.

To get an PhD degree in Archaeology, it is required to complete 240 ECTS credits and have at least 2,75 general academic avarege out of 4,00.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Students who are accepted to register in the PhD Program are who completed Master education or get an equivalent education abroad.

The PhD program is to train top level of archaeologists who are sensible to humanity, society and moral values; respectful to themselves and around; qualified in their profession; has a broad vision, willing to life-long learning; supportive of scientific way of thinking; effective users of basic and up to date information in archaeology; acting in accordance with social, scientific and technical values to collect archaeological data; interpretation and publicizing; highly skilled in legislation, material and curatorial knowledge; open to different thoughts and cultures; able to think creatively and critically.

Department of Archaeology PhD Program graduates can work as a top level of expertised archaeologist in; academic institutions, under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Monuments and Museums, state and private museums, Provincial Protection Committee and municipalities.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The Department of Archaeology at the Faculty of Letters PhD program offers a four year mainstream education (Three semester of coursework (90 AKTS) fourth semester of preparation to PhD proficiency (30 AKTS) and last fourth semester for a dissertation). To get an PhD degree in Archaeology, it is required to complete 240 ECTS The language of instruction is Turkish.

Testing and evaluation methods implemented in the courses and thesis are defined in the “course instructional plan” which is in the information package. The relevant items in the Examination Regulations of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education are used for the exams and grades.

Students are required to take courses provided by the department in return for 240 ECTS credits and to be successful; have a general academic average of 2.75 out of 4.00 and successfuly complete the PhD thessis for graduation.
