Hacettepe University Faculty of Dentistry Department of Orthodontics was established in 1966 as a joint department with Pedodontics, and then started functioning as a seperate department in 1975.
DOCTORATE level of education is given in our department. Our department consists of 8 academics, 11 research assistants and 12 administrative personel. It offers a diverse education programme with various multidisciplinary treatment options as well as a chance to see a number of different orthodontic problems and treatment philosophies due to the broad spectrum of interests of the professors. Educational language is Turkish.

The students who have a graduate degree in dentistry and fulfill the requirements of the Instutute of Health Sciences are admitted to the Doctorate programme in every fall and spring semester after an oral examination. The number of students to be admitted, the qualifications of the applicants, the necessary documentation for application, the dates for application and exam and other requirements are announced by the institute.
The doctorate programme lasts 8 semesters.The programme consists of at least 24 national credits, a qualification test after 4 semesters, thesis proposal, presentation of the thesis and argument of thesis. The post-graduate courses are either elective or compulsory. The student is required to attend the theoretical and practical courses. The total ECTS credit of the programme is 240. Successful students who have completed at least one semester in another post-graduate programme of a different university are eligible to apply for transfer to the programme. The aim of the programme is to graduate the students with the best educational and research abilities, who are qualified to be defined as scientists, are able to use the most advanced methods available for diagnosis and treatment of orthodontic cases, have the drive to serve his/her community and humanity with his/her knowledge, is considered knowledgeable in national and international platforms, and who have the ability to analyse-synthesize.
The graduates of the programme can become academics if they fulfill the criteria determined by the Department. Others can work in private practice or government institutions.
In the first four semesters, the student receives theoretical and practical education needed for the Qualification Exam. The next 2 years is for doctoral thesis work, routine patient treatments and arguement of the thesis. 75% of the courses are compulsory and 25% of the courses are elective. Elective courses start with the first semester. Courses are given on a semester basis and some of them are theoretical while the others are more practical.
