D.1. General Information about Program

Department of Biostatistics was established in 1982 as a branch of Medical Biology. In 1996, it gained the status as a department under the Basic Medical Sciences.

Department engages the undergraduate biostatistics and computer science courses for the students of Faculty of Medicine and other faculties and colleges.

In addition to undergraduate education, department has also master, doctoral and integrated doctoral program within the Institute of Health Sciences. So far, 42 people received master science degree and 30 people received a PhD degree.

In addition to undergraduate and graduate courses, department also provides biostatistics and clinical experimental design courses at different levels according to the needs of different hospitals and health institutions.

Medium of education is Turkish. Foreign students are also accepted to the program.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

To graduate from at least 4-year departments of faculties and schools.

Those who do not have a bachelor's degree in statistics take scientific preparation courses for one semester or a year, which are deemed appropriate by the Academic Board of the Department.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In this program, students who complete all the courses (a total of 60 ECTS credits) with an academic grade point average of at least 2.75, have to prepare a thesis under the supervision of thesis advisor and defend the thesis in the front of the jury. Having succesfully defend his/her thesis, students will be given diploma of master of science.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

Program aims to educate biostatistics experts who have sufficient knowledge on research, are able to improve in their fields, easily communicate with people he/she is working with, can fulfill his/her responsibilities both individually and as a team member, are well-educated, intellectual, and reliant on ethical issues by means of a global biostatistics education.

The objective of the program is to educate students who have basic knowledge of theoretical biostatistics, are able to apply biostatistical methods appropriately, and interpret results of their studies, are able to plan, carry out, and finalize independent research in their fields, and are able to use statistical software.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates can work in research companies, pharmaceutical companies and government agencies where pharmaceutical researches are conducted. Graduates can also continue their education for PhD degree. In addition, academic career is also possible for graduates.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The program is planned to be completed in at least four semesters. The first two semesters are referred to as course training period while the last two semesters as thesis period. The courses included in the program are: “Article Criticism” with 2 ECTS, “Seminar” with 3 ECTS, compulsory courses with 21 ECTS, selective courses with 55 ECTS and thesis work with 60 ECTS. 1 ECTS corresponds to 30 hours of workload. In the first two semesters; compulsory and elective courses should be completed to make a total of 60 ECTS. 44% of total 60 ECTS credits are compulsory courses, the rest 56% are elective courses. All elective courses, could be selected from the program courses. Student who completed the 60 ECTS, advances the preparation of the master's thesis stage. TEB 601 Medical Terminology is a substitute for BIS 602 Health and Medical Terminology.
