D.1. General Information about Program

Department of Biostatistics was established in 1982 as a branch of Medical Biology. In 1996, it gained the status as a department under the Basic Medical Sciences.

Department engages the undergraduate biostatistics and computer science courses for the students of Faculty of Medicine and  other faculties and colleges.

In addition to undergraduate education, department has also master, doctoral and integrated doctoral program within the Institute of Health Sciences. So far, 52 people received master science degree and 52 people received a PhD degree.

In addition to undergraduate and graduate courses, department also provides biostatistics and clinical experimental design courses at different levels according to the needs of different hospitals and health institutions.

Medium of education is Turkish. Foreign students are also accepted to the program.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

Students who have Master degree of Biostatistics or Statistics and provides the requirements of the Institute of Health Sciences are accepted as candidates of the program.

Having ALES (SAY) score type and ALES and Foreign Language base score determined by the Health Sciences Institute Board and approved by the Hacettepe University Senate http://www.saglikbilimleri.hacettepe.edu.tr/en/menu/ales_foreign_language_scores-252

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In this program, students who complete all the courses (a total of 90 ECTS credits) with an academic grade point average of at least 3.00, takes the PhD Proficiency Exam. Following this exam, students have to prepare a thesis under the supervision of thesis advisor and defend the thesis in front of the jury. Having succesfully defend his/her thesis, students will be given diploma of PhD.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

Program aims to educate biostatisticians who are professionalized on research topics, are capable of developing new methods regarding the theory of statistics and its applications, are able to improve their statistical knowledge, are well-educated, intellectual, and reliant on ethical issues by means of a global biostatistics education.

The objective of the program is to educate biostatisticians who are able to apply statistical methods in new fields, have sufficient theoretical knowledge on biostatistics to be able to make scientific contributions to science, are able to apply advanced biostatistical methods properly and interpret results of their studies, are able to plan, carry out, and finalize researchs in their fields individually, and are able to use more than one statistical software efficiently.

Graduates can work in research companies, pharmaceutical companies and government agencies where pharmaceutical researches are conducted. In addition, academic career is also possible for graduates.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The program is planned to be completed in at least eight semesters. The first four semesters are referred to as course training period while the last four semesters as thesis period. The courses included in the program are: "Article Criticism" with 2 ECTS, "Seminar" with 3 ECTS, "Applications In Biostatistical Consulting" with 2 ECTS compulsory courses with 35 ECTS, selective courses with 83 ECTS, "Preparation to PhD Proficiency Exam" with 30 ECTS and thesis work with 120 ECTS. 1 ECTS corresponds to 30 hours of workload. In the first three semesters; compulsory and elective courses should be completed to make a total of 90 ECTS. 47% of total 90 ECTS credits are compulsory courses, the rest 53% are elective courses. All elective courses, could be selected from the program courses. Student who completed the 90 ECTS, takes the course of "Preparation to PhD Proficiency Exam" in fourth semester. At the end of this semester student takes the PhD Proficiency Exam. Student who succeeded the PhD Proficiency Exam, advances the preparation of the PhD thesis stage.
