D.1. General Information about Program

The Ph.D. program in the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at the Institute of Fine Arts offers a four-year mainstream education. The language of instruction is Turkish.

The condition of acceptance for the program is first having a Master's degree with thesis; where the priority shall be given to relevant professions (Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Environmental Design, Industrial Design, Urban Planning) and being passed the Entrance Exam.

The main purpose of the program is to enable students to produce theoretical and practical knowledge by understanding the connection between theory and practice by developing new scientific and artistic methods and techniques. Along with that, it is intended to make correlations among the interdisciplinary fields through commissioning original scientific and artistic works.

The entry condition for the program is to have a Master's degree with thesis; where the priority shall be given to relevant professions (Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Environmental Design, Industrial Design, Urban Planning). In addition that according to the regulations of Hacettepe University, Postgraduate Education, each candidate is required to get the score of 55 from YDS, e-YDS, YÖKDİL or to get an equivalent score from one of the national and international exams which are accepted by the ÖSYM. Candidates who meet the application requirements and who apply in accordance with the rules set by the University are admitted to the Entrance Exam held by the Department. Entrance Exam is composed of two parts, including 50 (fifty) points for a design and a written exam and 50 (fifty) points for an oral exam; thus, the entrance exam is evaluated over 100 (one hundred) points in total. At the beginning of the design and written exam, the candidate's CV and a portfolio containing artistic/scientific studies are presented to the Entrance Exam Jury. Candidates who do not submit the CV and portfolio are deemed to have waived their right to examination.

The entrance examination consists of one design problem which is arranged to specify the basic design skills and interpretation competence required by the field and one written exam. Candidates whose examination documents are kept for two years are responsible for the following titles:

  • Design: To measure the size, to design and to make two and three-dimensional drawings of any space given by Entrance Examination Jury.
  • Written exam: The interpretation of theoretical knowledge about design areas.

In the oral exam, candidates are responsible for the following topics:

  • Evaluation of design and written examinations,
  • Theoretical knowledge of design areas.

The overall grade of the applicants is 40% of the undergraduate GPA and 60% of the score obtained from the Entrance Exam. Candidates with a minimum score of 60 (sixty) from the Entrance Examination and a minimum score of 70 (seventy) from the general grade are considered successful. In case of equality of the general grade, the Entrance Examination score is taken into consideration.

For being awarded the Ph.D. degree, it is required to complete 240 ECTS (21 national credits), to achieve 3 must courses and electives, to achieve minimum 3,00 GPA and to succeed the dissertation defense (http://www.gse.hacettepe.edu.tr/mevzuat.html).

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

In order to get acceptance, candidates are required to have a Master's degree with thesis; where the priority shall be given to relevant professions (Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Environmental Design, Industrial Design, Urban Planning), achieve the compulsory foreign language score (in one of the exams; YDS, KPDS, TOEFL or IELTS) and pass the Entrance Exam.

The program aims to train researches in order to produce scientific and artistic knowledge that can be used both theoretically and practically. Students are expected to not only develop and assess the current cultural, technical and practical knowledge but also produce new design knowledge and develop new methods. Along with that, the objective of the Ph.D. program in Interior Architecture and Environmental Design is to train innovative and creative researchers who are capable of analytical thinking and able to make contributions to society through developing and applying new methods that enable to enrich the design culture.

Graduates of the program are primarily adequate to work in academic and research foundations as an instructor. Furthermore, they can work in the departments regarding project development, implication and coordination of design work in several private and governmental institutes, and also can establish their own company and work independently.

The program consists of 8 semesters. These 8 semesters consist of 27 courses in total that 6 of them are required and 21 of them are elective (240 ECTS credit / 21 national credits). The %78 of degree program courses are in elective status.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Testing and evaluation methods implemented in the courses are defined in the “course instructional plan” which takes place in the information package of every course. Students are required to take 6 must course and electives in return for minimum 21 national credits (240 ECTS credit) and succeed in them; have a general academic average of 3,00 GPA out of 4.00, to publish one original scientific research paper before the Doctoral Proficiency Exam and succeed the dissertation defence to be able to graduate from the program (http://www.gse.hacettepe.edu.tr/mevzuat.html).
