PRESCHOOL TEACHING PROGRAMME


D.1. General Information about Program

Early Childhood Education Program was established in the 1997-98 academic year as a part of Turkish Higher Education Council's teacher education restructuring efforts. Our program aims to train high quality early childhood teachers through its undergraduate program as well as offers masters and doctorate degrees for those who would like to further their education in the field. The language of instruction is Turkish.

  • In order to ensure the graduation requirements, it is necessary that students should take at least 50 ECTS credits elective courses with ECE are coded proposed by the department.
  • Grade 1 students are expected to complete elective courses from the outside of the department. In addition students can choose elective courses from the ECE 1XX coded elective courses.
  • Grade 2 students can choose elective courses from the ECE 2XX and 1XX coded elective courses. Students can choose elective courses from the 3XX coded elective courses but they need the approval of course instructor and academic adviser.
  • Grade 3 students can choose elective courses from the ECE 3XX, 2XX and 1XX coded elective courses. Students can choose elective courses from the 4XX coded elective courses but they need the approval of course instructor and academic adviser.
  • Grade 4 students can choose all ECE coded elective courses in the program.
  • Undergraduate transfer and external transfer students can choose elective courses from the ECE 4XX, ECE 3XX, ECE 2XX and ECE 1XX coded elective courses.but they need the approval of course instructor and academic adviser.

Candidates who want to be admitted to the Early Childhood Education program must have a valid secondary education degree (or equivalent approved by the Council of Higher Education) and attain a certain score on the Student Selection Test Type-5 (The passing score may change every year and determined by many factors such as the number of candidates applying the program).

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Have completed secondary school education in Turkey to study in our department, or an equivalent overseas to be trained and must have received enough points from the national university entrance exam.Bachelor's degree in 4 years. Conditions required for graduation: the program requirements (Total 240 ECTS) successfully complete all the courses and the weighted GPA is at least 1.80 out of 4.00.

The two primary aims of Early Childhood Education Program are:

1- To train early childhood educators who : can utilize the latest developments in the field; believe democratic values; are a defender of human/children rights; value personal differences; think critically and flexibly; can express her/himself freely; are creative, intuitive and self-reflecting; believe in life-long learning; open to international, inter-discipliner collaboration; can effectively utilize information technologies; respectful to the social and ecological environment she/he is living in.

2- To offer graduate programs in order to assist researchers and non-academic specialists to improve their professional knowledge and skills.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Program graduates may be employed as a teacher at public and private child care facilities, public school kindergarten classrooms (all supervised by the Turkish Ministry of National Education) and other child care facilities (Crèches and Preschools) governed by public and private organizations. Graduates who want to further their education may apply to our graduate programs which offer masters and doctorate degrees.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Early Childhood Education Program is a four year program following the national curriculum which was established according to Turkish Council of Higher Education's Turkish Higher Education Competencies Framework. In addition to the core courses on child development care and education, the program also offers professional (teacher education) and general education courses. Moreover, based on their academic and professional interests, students can choose between numerous electives from both the Elementary Education Department and other departments within the university.
