DENTISTRY PROGRAMME


D.1. General Information about Program

The School of Dentistry was founded in 1963 as part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Hacettepe University. It was the second dentistry school in Turkey and established as “Faculty of Dentistry” in 1971. The first graduates of Hacettepe University Dental Faculty were in 1968. The number of graduates has been 3772, post graduates at the PhD level, 317, and 83 at the specialist levelup to 2018. As of today, 635 students are having education. Full- time students are accepted to the Faculty. The language of education is Turkish. Students who get high score at the university entrance exam primarily prefer our Faculty to have a DDS degree after completing five year dentistry programme. The programme includes theoretical and practical courses including basic science and dentistry as well as ethics, statistics, communication and research. Elective courses are organized to give knowledge and skill in different areas according to the interests of the students. Education, research and health services in our Faculty are carried on by 73 faculty, 55 Specialists and 95 Research Assistants in 8 Departments. Departments are in the first part of our new and modern building we moved in 2009. In the second part, there are sterilisation unit, Dean's office and administrative offices. There are 4 classrooms (190-220 student capacity, computer and video projection), student locker rooms and cabinets, art square, bulletin boards, student lounge and computer room at Floor -1, Maxillofacial Radiology Department, Ergun Ayd─▒nl─▒k lab, Prosthodontics Clinic, Integrated clinic and Dental Store at Entrance floor, technical service units, research lab, pre-clinical simulation labs owed to Departments of Endodontics and Restorative Treatment at Floor A. At the other floors, there are departments and clinics of Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Periodontology, Endodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. Clinics serve about 80.000 patients per year. Faculty has been a member of ADEE(Association for Dental Education in Europe) since 2004 and exchanging student and staff with European countries through Erasmus programme since 2007.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

To be accepted to dentistry programme, Turkish secondary education degree or a foreign equivalent degree should be taken. Students should have a passing grade from the national "Undergraduate Placement Exam (LYS)" on the basis of MF scoring type and fulfill the requirements of Higher Education Council(Y├ľK) of Turkey. Registrations of students are done on the days determined and declared by the Presidency of the University. Requirements and quotas for foreign students who will be accepted to undergraduate programs are determined by the University and can be followed on Registrar's Office website each year on May. D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

For graduation, a total 300 ECTS from theoretical, practical courses and clinical training should be completed. Students should have 30 ECTS per semester. 1 ECTS is equal to 30 hours workload. Upon graduation, the success of the student is determined by academic average score. Academic average score is calculated by dividing the weighted sum of all courses to course credits. The weighted score of a course is calculated by multiplying the student's grade and national credit of the course. The credit of each course is determined by theoretical hours of that course per week and half of practical course hours per week. The success of a course is determined by evaluating the midterm and final or make-up exams. Exams are assessed according to a score out of 100. Annual success grade is calculated by adding 40% of midterm and 60% of the final exam scores. Students are required to have at least 50 points to be successful in final or make-up exams. Annual success score is at least 55 points (Regulations of Education and Examination of Dental Faculty, number 19,20).

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Exemption exams are organized by the University at the beginning of each academic year for the courses of Basic Information And Communication Technologies and English language. Students who pass these exams are accepted to have completed the credits of these courses. Admission and registration of students who wish to transfer to Faculty of Dentistry from dental faculties of other universities, is determined according to the quota and requirements determined by the Higher Education Council and to the associated rules of Regulations of Education and Examination of Dental Faculty

The courses that these students had formerly and were found equivalent are transferred; students' adaptation to the education programme are provided by the Directory Board of Faculty.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

To train highly qualified dentists with a 5-year master's degree in education covering basic and clinical dentistry information, to carry out all the necessary activities at the highest level for protecting and treatment of oral and dental health of the society adhering to the rules of ethics. This programme covers all the theoretical and practical courses in the field of dentistry and aims providing technical skills and competences to the graduates. Graduates of dentistry programme have the necessary knowledge and skill to diagnose and treat the diseases and developmental disorders of teeth and neighborhood tissues.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates can work in the hospitals of Ministery of Health, private health institutions and in their own dental office as a dentist. They can also enter the specialization exam in dentistry (DUS) and have the opportunity to be a specialist by attending the specialisation programmes of departments and can do academic career according to their success.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

75% of 300 ECTS credits that must be completed during the curriculum comprised compulsory courses and 25% are elective courses. Compulsory and elective courses are given by dentistry, medicine, basic medical and clinical medical departments, medical education, statistics, epidemiology, communication and sport sciences, occupational therapy, theater, fine arts, physical therapy departments and section of elective courses. In addition, as the guidelines are set by the University Senate, Turkish language, Foreign language, Atat├╝rk's Principles and History of Turkish Revolution, Basic Information and Communication Technologies courses are compulsory. Basic Information and Communication Technologies course are given by internet based teaching during the first semester. All of the courses of are completed in one semester. Except for the first class, all practical and clinical practice courses were opened in both semesters in the same year. All the theoretical and practical courses in each academic year are complimentory of the previous year and pre-requisite of the next year. For this reason, class passing system rather than course passing is applied in the Faculty. The courses in the first and second years of the program, cover basic medical and dental information, third, fourth and fifth year courses are related to the profession of knowledge, skill and competencies in dentistry, fourth and fifth years are clinical training classes. In the previous curriculum, one of sports and fine arts courses was a compulsory elective course. The number and types of elective courses are increased in the new regulation of the curriculum. The new program consists of elective courses in each semester. The percentage of ECTS credits for the elective courses related the area of the profession is 54.7% and it is 45.3% for other areas. The percentage of elective courses during the first four semesters is higher compared to other semesters.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

300 ECTS credits of compulsory and elective courses in theoretical, practical and clinical applications during five years should be successfully completed. Average success score must be at least 55 out of 100. A total of 30 ECTS credits must be completed each semester. In practical applications, a certain number of work should be completed and delivered during a certain period of time each year. Clinical training is added to theoretical courses in 4th and 5th classes. In clinical training courses, students have to treat a certain number of patients and need to be successful in practical and oral exams.
