PHILOSOPHY PROGRAMME


D.1. General Information about Program

The Department of Philosophy was founded in 1969. It covers a wide range of fields in the history of philosophy and offers programmes in undergraduate and graduate levels. There are elective courses for students from other departments, especially for students from the Department of Sociology and of Psychology who want to pursue a career as a high-school teacher. The language of education is Turkish. The department has Erasmus and Farabi agreements with several universities. In addition, the department offers minor degree programs in various fields provided that the student meets the criteria.

Since 2007, the Department of Philosophy organizes symposiums concerning distinguished philosophers every semester, and it has Bilge Karasu Library with approximately 4000 books on literature and philosophy.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

In order to be admitted, at least a high-school diploma is required. Besides, students must pass the LYS exam.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to graduate from the department, students have to take all the must courses and elective courses with total amount of 30 national credits. The total credit of the program is 130 national, 240 ECTS credits. In addition, at least 2, OO GPA is required according to the Hacettepe University undergraduate education regulations. Students should not be discharged from the programme because of the reasons indicated in the article 29 of the aforementioned regulations.

The recognition of the courses which belong to students' prior learning is organized through Hacettepe University undergraduate education regulations.

Exchange students must take into account that their courses are recognized only if there is a similar course in their home university and providing that the instructor and the head of the department approve the recognition.

The aim of the programme is to raise awareness concerning the need of philosophical knowledge in various fields of knowledge and in leading personal and social life; and to grow graduates who carry out notable researches, work in various academic institutions both in Turkey and in abroad, and contribute to science and humanity.

Our graduates are able to find position in university departments of philosophy, in private and public educational institutions, in related units of various ministries, in media including TRT, and in the units of education, culture, human relations, planning and assessment of various private and public corporations.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

There are 58 undergraduate courses (42 elective and 16 required ) in the programme. In addition to these, students have to take AİT (Atatürk's Principles and History of Revolutions), TKD (Turkish Language) and ING (Basic English) courses. Students can take elective courses from the departments of Sociology and Psychology if they want. Besides, they can add courses with “SEÇ” code, which are elective courses offered for all departments.

Our department offers elective courses for other departments including “Introduction to Philosophy” which is open to all departments in the university.

Required courses of the department are courses on history and on traditional core areas of philosophy. In its third and fourth years the programme contains less required courses and more elective courses in order to offer a chance for students to specialize. When the total credit of programme is taken into account, students have to take at least %40 of the elective courses from their own department. This amounts to 30 national and approximately 50 ECTS credits. Students have opportunity to write a bachelor's thesis.
