Second Cycle Programmes
(Master's Degree)

D.1. General Information about Program

Back

Since its foundation, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Urology has been a leader and a prominent organization of Turkish Urological Society, thanks to its good medicine practices as well as its highly qualified and educated academicians. Uro-oncology is a special issue which requires specialization following general urology education. Although surgical treatment is technically difficult in urologic cancers, it offers an effective solution for survival and has a direct effect on patient?s quality of life. Therefore, uro-oncology physicians need to undergo a multidisciplinary, regular and standardized theoretical and practical education. In the past 30 years, significant advancements have been observed in this field in developed countries; sound and productive specialty associations have been established, uro-oncology fellowship programs with well-defined standards have been defined and have become widespread particularly in the USA. The number of lecturers competent in uro-oncology is rather limited in most of the universities and public hospitals offering fellowship programs in Turkey. On the other hand, the Turkish Association of Uro-oncology was established in 1999 with the aims to organize national and international scientific meetings and congresses; to prepare the journals, books and other publications to be used in uro-oncology education; to carry out post-faculty and post-specialty academic development studies; to perform researches; to help the members improve their occupational studies; to protect and enhance their rights and to gain benefits by collaborating with the state organs and corporate bodies as needed within the framework of the objectives of the association.

Considering the fact that Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Urology is one of the prominent clinics in uro-oncology, this program was decided to be opened in order to meet the qualified and educated personnel required in this field. Former chairman of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Urology, Prof. Dr. Haluk Özen is the founding member of the Turkish Association of Uro-oncology. Uro-oncology Congress, which is the most significant scientific organization of the Turkish Association of Uro-oncology, dates back to the international Ankara Uro-oncology Course organized by Dr. Haluk Özen for the first time in 1992. Furthermore, 8 specialists received uro-oncology education in our Department under the leadership of Dr. Haluk Özen.

The master?s degree study program on ?uro-oncology? we have offered will be carried out in our Department which has undertaken uro-oncology for long years and has become a reference center, indeed. The graduate student will be expected to complete a basic scientific research on uro-oncology in two years. We believe, this program will raise consciousness about the subject and will become a starting point for a country-wide education.

The program will be carried out in Turkish language. For graduation, students will need to have completed minimum 10 courses and a term project, not less than 30 credits and 60 ECTS. The education program consists of clinical skills such as patient assessment/monitoring as well as theoretical courses and it requires active involvement in practical applications such as prostate biopsy, flexible cystoscopy etc. and in surgical treatments. Elective courses related with the basic and occupational courses defined in the program will be offered by the relevant departments of Hacettepe University Institute of Social Sciences as well as the relevant faculty members of our Department. Practical courses will be carried out in the clinics, outpatient clinics and operation rooms of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Urology.
