D.1. General Information about Program

The aim of Science Education Master Program is to move students' science education knowledge, skills and understading to upper levels, and also to help their carreer development by improving their access to knowledge and interpretation skills of knowledge. In addition, students gains environmentally friend behaviors and puberty related information. In this view, the aim of the proposed program is to inform primary and middle school students about new trends and research in science education to improve their content and skills to become an expert in their field.

Hacettepe University Department of Science Teacher Education Program has academic staff with excellent background. Department of Science Teacher Education Program has 14 academic staff with PhD from various countries like Turkey, USA, Germany, England and France. This academic staff has the capability of giving master level science education in global perspective. Compared to other master programs in Turkey our program has academic staff with different perspectives.

Division of Elementary Science Education has started education during the fall semester of 2014-2015. Masters program of the Division of Elementary Science Education is a thesis program. Although the language of education is Turkish, students who are planning to enroll in the program are required to have a foreign language competency enough to follow and comprehend the intertaion literature.

Canditates who completed a four year undergraduate program successfully may apply in the program. Candidates should meet the requirements of the Graduate School of Educational Sciences, at Hacettepe University. Entrance exams are conducted by the divisions based on the guidelines defined by the Graduate teaching and learning and exam legislation of the Graduate School of Educational Sciences at Hacettepe University. Experience in teaching and having an undergraduate degree in elementary education are prefered qualifications. Students who are accepted in the program may be required to take minimum of 12 credit hours of courses for the purpose scientific preparation.

The guidelines defined by the Graduate teaching and learning and exam legislation of the Graduate School of Educational Sciences at Hacettepe University are applied. Students who are accepted to the program are required to take minimum of 24 national credit in addition to non-credit seminer course and complete the program successfully. Students have to complete a master thesis with an advisor assigned by the division and have to successfuly complete a thesis defense.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

In Turkish higher education institutions, recognition of previous formal education, vertical, horizontal and within university transitions are determined by the related regulations of the Council of Higher Education (YOK) . A limited number of courses can be transfered between departments or a student may continue his/her education in a different department as long as conditions identified by the regulations are met. Since recognizing an informal education is at very early stages in Turkish Higher Education, YOK does not recognize education other than formal learning experiences.

The purpose of the Science Education Masters' Program is to provide students with the maximum level of theoretical knowledge, skills and comprehension on the field of their proficiency and prepare students as researchers who are experts in their fields andethical who has the knowledge of science process skills, democratic values, and are creative and able to think critically and analitically, who are lifelong learners, environmentally sensitive and socially responsible.

A graduate student of the program is expected to grasp current methods, techniques, and advancements in the field of Science Education both nationally and internationally. Students are also expected to develop understanding regarding environmental-friendly approaches and child development in both elementary and secondary levels. Learning about laboratory activities, special teaching methods, and teaching models are also key parts of the program.

Graduates of Elementary Science Education Master Program may take place in teaching and research staff of universities, private schools, public schools and various departments of the Ministry of National Education for research, program, control and management positions with the title of science expert.

Master Program in Science Education takes 2 years. There are 24 courses in the program. In addition, in cases where needed Scientific Preparatory is composed of 9 courses. Students may also choose elective courses from other enstitutes and departments.
