D.1. General Information about Program

Back

Foundations of department of Speech and Language Therapy in Hacettepe University have been laid with the onset of graduate program of Audiology in 1968. After 1989, graduate program of Audiology had been revised and have continued as “Audiology and Speech Disorders” both for doctorate and master's degree programmes. Department of Speech and Language Therapy has been officially opened up in 17th April 2013 subpart of Audiology Department. Later, in 22th December 2014 Department of Speech and Language Therapy has been disjointed from Audiology Department and hereby became an independent department under the roof of Faculty of Health Sciences.

Alums of Speech Language Therapy programme gain the ability of conducting objective and subjective tests, diagnose definitive diagnosis, evaluating and designing therapy programmes for all age groups of patients (infants, adolescents, adults and elders) with the help of acquired theoretical background and clinical observations. Besides, alums of department can handle several issues such as voice disorders, Specific Language Impairment (SLI), articulation and speech voice disorders, dyslexia, dysgraphia, children who need special rehabilitation and who have hearing impairments, neurological speech and language disorders (e.g. aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia) and dysphagia and so many other cases in terms of multi/inter/transdisciplinary framework. Thus, alums of graduate programme of Speech Language Therapy may have the ability of using both objective and subjective evaluation methods via instrumental and perceptual approaches. They can do necessary planning and management.

After graduation, alums do have the “Master of Science” degree. In this general context, masters who are equipped with abilities such as evaluation of speech and language disorders and application of therapy techniques, planning and conducting scientific researches are being educated in this department. Alums of Speech and Language Therapy graduate program can utilize the competences they gain during therapy applications, clinical observations and academic researches thus in the next step have the ability of professional application and research.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

Entering for department of Speech and Language Therapy graduate programme, candidates should primarily graduate from Speech and Language Therapy undergraduate programme.

To have ALES (SAY / EA) score type and ALES and Foreign Language base score determined by the Health Sciences Institute Board and approved by the Hacettepe University Senate

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

For graduation from Speech and Language Therapy graduate programme, all students have to complete 120 ECTS successfully. Or equivalent education in abroad is required.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Bachelor degree from Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent degree from international programmes are valid.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The main objective of graduate program of Speech and Language Therapy is to educate expert speech and language therapists in accordance with the intendent goals of health and rehabilitation field. In this respect, this is a notable step for meeting the needs of community and the other crucial aim is to provide education standards and increase the quality of current education system.

The primitive mission of graduate programme of Speech and Language Therapy is to approach the problems of speech and language adequately by supplying high standard knowledge, clinical service and research opportunities to the students and community, and training expert speech and language therapists with highest skills in both health services and scientific research by implementing principles of speech and language science to students, and improving problem solving skills in their profession.

As an academic department, Speech and Language Therapy adopt the principle of raising awareness and being informed of public people. Besides Speech and Language department which utilize the information and contribute to science have the national and international leadership qualification in evidence based education with the aim of enterprising and interdisciplinary approach in cooperation.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Alums of Speech and Language Therapy may have the chance to work as a speech-language pathologists in state/private hospitals, companies, special clinics, education centers etc. Also, after graduation in higher studies, they have the chance working in academic positions in state or college universities.

In concern with measurement and evaluation procedures, ?Course Information Packs? which prepared by academic/s are defined for assessment system. For graduation from Speech and Language Therapy, at least 60 ECTS course and 60 ECTS thesis and totally 120 ECTS course load must be completed.
