D.1. General Information about Program

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology was founded in 1965 ? 1966 academic year and started education of medical faculty 3rd year students. The founders of the department are Prof. Dr. Şükrü Kaymakçalan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. S. Oğuz Kayaalp. The department also started its postgraduate education the same year. The departments have in vitro organ baths and perfusion systems; in vivo systems and in vitro electrophysiology and hemodynamics hardware; cardiovascular and central nervous system pharmacology and pharmacogenetic laboratories; chemistry laboratories which are equipped with HPLC, Western blot and PCR systems.

To graduate from the Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy and the other four years Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry undergraduate/engineering programmes.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Master's program consists of education, research and application activities for at least 4 semesters. Students are expected to successfully complete a minimum of 21 national credits and 120 ECTS credits of lectures and work, including lectures that are compulsory for master's program. Students who do not hold MD degrees are also expected to complete medical faculty's 2nd year committees lectures successfully (scientific preparation period; about one year). If the student does not hold a certificate of approval to use laboratory animals, the student is expected to complete FAR790 Lab Animals and Bases of Experimental Intervention course and get certified to use laboratory animals by Hacettepe University Animal Experimentations Local Ethics Board. Students complete a research project as their thesis under the guidance of their supervisors and defend their thesis at the end of the program.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

The lectures a student takes in the last 3 years before enrollment to the program; including the lectures a student completes as a private student; are transferred to the program of the student and committed to their transcript in accordance to Hacettepe University Postgraduate Education and Examination Act, section 22; with endorsement from the supervisor, suggestion of the department and the acceptance of the institute board of directors.

To train human resources that can evaluate biological activity at the level of molecules, cells, tissues, systems and the whole organism, establish hypotheses and prepare and present the results in a report.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates of Pharmacology Master's Program mostly continue their education in Doctorate program and work as a researcher or academician in national or foreign universities. The graduates that do not choose a research career are employed in public or private institutions like pharmaceutical industry, research and development centers, Drug and Medical Device Association, Social Security Institution, Turkish Public Health Institution, pharmaceutical consultancy companies and occupational organizations.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Pharmacology Masters Program is planned to encompass at least four semesters of education. Program is divided into two phases of lecture phase and thesis phase; each lasting for at least two semesters. Students take the compulsory and selective lectures together in lecture phase. The lectures in the first semester of the program provides students with the basic information on the discipline and the lectures in the second semester are generally geared towards giving the student the information and skills on the special fields in which they would want to specialize. The students are able and encouraged to take lectures from other semesters' selectives within the program or lectures from other programs of the Health Sciences Institute. The students are expected to successfully complete 21 credits or 60 ECTS credits worth of lectures. The 50%of the ECTS credits must be completed from compulsory lectures and the other 50% is left for selective lectures. At least 60% of the selective lectures should be chosen from the Pharmacology Master?s Program lectures. The student prepares a research work on a determined thesis subject under the guidance of their supervisor in thesis phase. Thesis phase consists of at least two semesters. The data obtained at the end of this phase is used for student?s thesis and research article. The student who completed their adequacy requirements also is needed to defend their thesis before a jury of select professors in the field. The student who successfully defends their thesis is granted their Master?s degree.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Pharmacology Master's program examinations consist of midterm exams, general exams,  excuse exams. The adequacy on a lecture is determined with the lecture success grade. A student who takes at least 65/100 in a lecture's succes grade is accepted to pass the lecture. Lecture success grade is calculated using the achievements a student shows during the semester (midterm exams, homework assignments, practical studies etc.) and the final exam score together. The final exam contributes to at least 50% of the lecture success grade. A student who was not able to take the final exam is considered to fail the lecture.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

The students need to successfully complete 120 ECTS credit hours to graduate from Pharmacology Master's Program. After 60 credits of the credit hours are granted from the compulsory and selective lectures accepted by the program, student completes their thesis work in 2 semesters. Thesis work phase corresponds to a total of 60 ECTS credits. The students who complete their thesis work publish their text within the rules of Health Sciences Institute and pass their thesis defense examination. To earn their Master's Degree in Pharmacology, the student must satisfy Hacettepe University Postgraduate Education and Examination Regulations, successfully defend their thesis and get a minimum grade point average of 2.75/4.00.
