D.1. General Information about Program

Hacettepe University Pharmacology postgraduation education started in 1965-1966 academic year. Department of Pharmacology was founded by Gül Ayanoğlu-Dülger in 1979. Postgraduate education has been carried out together with faculty members from the Pharmacology department of Faculty of Medicine up to now as graduate master and doctorate program at Institute of Health Sciences. Since 2015-2016 fall term, it has been carried out as a separate program at Institute of Health Sciences by the faculty members from Pharmacology Department of Faculty of Pharmacy.

The education language is Turkish. Students are expected to successfully accomplish medical faculty's 2nd semester committees' Physiology lectures, to complete 240 ECTS credits of program and to prepare and defense a thesis for 4 years Doctorate degree graduate program.

The education program includes theorical courses together with laboratory practice. The compulsory and elected courses are given by the faculty members of Department of Pharmacology. The elective courses may also be chosen from other Programs within Institutes of Hacettepe University. The practical laboratory courses are carried out in our deparment research laboratory.

Graduation degree obtained from a Faculty of Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary or a 4 years program of Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics or Chemistry. To accomplish the general requirements of the Hacettepe University Institute of Health Sciences Doctorate Degree Program and to be successful in the departmental interview. 

The Pharmacology program PhD students should complete and pass the selected subject committee lectures of Phase II in Faculty of Medicine according to the Hacettepe University Postgraduate Education and Exam Regulation as a part of scientific preparation program if required by the academic board of the Pharmacology Department.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Doctorate program consists of education, research and application activities for at least 8 semesters. Students are expected to successfully complete a minimum of 120 ECTS credits of courses and work including the compulsory courses for the program and 120 ECTS credits of thesis. Students who started directly to the doctorate program and students who do not hold MD degrees are expected to complete medical faculty's 2nd semester committees' Physiology lectures successfully. If the student does not hold a certificate of approval to use laboratory animals, the student is expected to complete TFR790 Laboratory Animals and Principles of Experimental Interventions course and get certified to use laboratory animals by Hacettepe University Animal Experimentations Local Ethics Board.  The minimum 50% of the 90 ECTS credits must be completed from elective courses of pharmacology or other program.  When the student completes the courses, they need to pass the proficiency exam to start their thesis. The remaining 30 ECTS credits must be completed with Preparation to Doctorate Proficiency course. The courses are transferred to the program of the student and committed to their transcript in accordance to Hacettepe University Postgraduate Education and Examination Act, section 22; with endorsement of the supervisor, suggestion of the department and the acceptance of the institute board of directors.

The aim of Pharmacology Doctorate Degree program is to educate the students to acquire the skills such as making scientific researches independently in pharmacology field, hypothesize, query and present the obtained data at an international level.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates of Pharmacology Doctorate Degree Program mostly continue their work as a researcher or academician in national or foreign universities. The graduates that do not choose a research career are employed in public or private institutions like pharmaceutical industry, research and development centers, Drug and Medical Device Association, Social Security Institution, Turkish Public Health Institution, pharmaceutical consultancy companies and occupational organizations.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Pharmacology Doctorate Program is planned to encompass at least eight semesters of education. Program is divided into two phases of course phase and thesis phase; each lasting for at least four semesters. Students take the compulsory and elective courses together in course phase. While the courses in the first part of the course phase are primarily compulsory, the third and fourth semester courses are mostly elective. The first two semesters' courses provides students with the basic information on the discipline and the courses in the third and fourth semesters are generally geared towards giving the student the information and skills on the special fields in which they would want to specialize. The students are able and encouraged to take lectures from other semesters' selectives within the program or lectures from other programs of the Health Sciences Institute. The students are expected to successfully complete 120 ECTS credits worth of courses. The 50% of the ECTS credits must be completed from compulsory courses and the other 50% is left for selective courses. At least 60% of the elective courses should be chosen from the Pharmacology Doctorate Program courses. After the course phase is completed, the student must take and succeed the proficiency exam for the Pharmacology Doctorate Program. The student prepares a research work on a determined thesis subject under the guidance of their supervisor in thesis phase. Thesis phase consists of at least four semesters. The data obtained at the end of this phase is used for student's thesis and research article and published according to the rules of Institute of Health Sciences. The student who completed their adequacy requirements also is needed to defend their thesis before a jury of select professors in the field. The student who successfully defends their thesis is granted their Doctorate degree.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Pharmacology Doctorate program examinations consist of midterm exams, general exams and excuse exams. The adequacy on a course is determined with the course success grade. A student who gets at least B3 (70-74/100) is accepted to pass that course. Course success grade is calculated using the achievements a student shows during the semester (midterm exams, homework assignments, practical studies etc.) and the final exam score together. The final exam contributes to at least 50% of the course success grade. D.16. Graduation Requirements

The students need to successfully complete 240 ECTS credits to graduate from Pharmacology Doctorate Program. After 90 ECTS credits are obtained from the compulsory and selective courses provided by the program, the students are qualified to take doctorate proficiency exam. The remaining 30 ECTS credits must be completed as preparation to doctorate proficiency course. The students who pass the proficiency exam work on their thesis for 4 semesters, which is considered as 120 ECTS credits. The students who complete their research, write their thesis according to the rules of Institute of Health Sciences and pass their thesis defense examination.
