D.1. General Information about Program

Our programme which was approved in 2012 by the Higher Education Council of Turkey began teaching activities in September 2012. The programme is situated within the International Relations academic discipline under the Graduate School of Social Sciences. The medium of teaching is English.

Our postgraduate programme develops the thought capacities of the enrolled students, and, teaches about conflicts, their underlying causes, and how they can be solved by peaceful and ethical means. It enables and sustains the motivation to elevate the position of peace and to create a global society of justice and peace by employing an intense culture of peace.

Our graduate programme adopts the strategy ot follow the scientific literature and contemporary sources on the field of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution in order to define and analyze regional and global conflicts, and to create peaceful and ethical solutions to these problems based on these analyses. In this context, our programme is supported through a protocol made with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey. The programme also enables our students to critically evaluate the interdisciplinary knowledge accummulated in the area of Peace and Conflict Studies, to canalise their learnings to their academic work, and in practice, to participate in the individual and group studies.

High level of academic English is employed in such studies used in our postgraduate programme as well as technological devices, and a highly specialized group of international faculty is employed as well.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The students have to have 36 credits' worth of specialization courses, and a total of 120 ECTS credits (see the Hacettepe University Regulations for Postgraduate Education and Examination, article 30(3).).

To be considered as successful from any course, a student must obtain at least the grade of C3 (see the Hacettepe University Regulations for Postgraduate Education and Examination, article 26(3).).

Those students who complete the must courses of the programme and whose academic GPA is 2.75 or over, may present a thesis/art project after the conclusion of the second semester (see the Hacettepe University Regulations for Postgraduate Education and Examination, article 31(1).).

Those students who completed their coursework are required to prepare a Master's Thesis in English language under the supervision of thesis advisors appointed by the academic department and to succeed in the thesis examination (see the Hacettepe University Regulations for Postgraduate Education and Examination, article 32 -33.).

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

It is possible for successful students who completed at least one semester from another, equivalent, national or international programme, to participate into our programme thoguht lateral transfer according to the Interuniversity Council Postgraduate Education Regulations article 5. The requirements demanded for lateral transfer are set according to the Article 18 of the Hacettepe University Regulations for Postgraduate Education and Examination.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to develop the critical thought processes of the students and to teach about conflicts, their underlying causes, and how they can be transformed and managed in a peaceful and ethical manner. It also aims to form and sustain the motivation to elevate the position of peace and to create a global society of justice and peace by employing an intense culture of peace.

The interdisciplinary nature of the programme aims to develop the ability to work in academic manner while learning analytical information concerning Peace Studies. While studying Peace Studies, the students are expected to deepen their knowledge in the following fields: Psychology, media, civil society, education, and human rights. The basic aim is to produce peace professionals who would bring the highest standards to the peace society in both academic and practical (field work) senses.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

As our programme started in 2012, it has not given any graduates. It is expected that the graduates of our programme are employed firstly in the Foreign Ministries of their relative countries, as well as international organizations such as the United Nations, European Union, Amnesty International and their subdivisions, and, additionally, at the civil society organizations which operate in domestic and/or international level.

Concomitantly, there are individual and/or institutional field employment possibilities. Additionally, the graduates of our programme may choose to pursue PhD or other academic work in select educational institutions around the globe. They may also seek employment in think-tanks which are recently becoming popular in Turkey, too, as analysts and specialised analysts. The graduates may also be employed in the media, international corporations, in companies which operate in international consultancy or mediation.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Our postgraduate programme with thesis during the course semester is made up of 50% of must and 50% of elective courses. The programme's courses are semester-long and are mainly theoretical courses; however, exercises which will improve the practical abilities of the students cover a great amount of the coursework. There are no prerequisite courses in the programme.

In necessary cases, a student who failed from a course may replace it with another with the mutual concent of the head of the department and the academic advisor.

Those students who complete the must courses of the programme and whose academic GPA is 2.75 or over, may present a thesis/art project after the conclusion of the second semester.

It is possible for the programme students to have training in different institutions and organizations but there is no compulsory training practice built into the programme.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The methods of assessment and evaluation for each course in the programme are defined in the “Course Education Plan” which is prepared by the lecturer of each individual course and located in the Information Pack. The related articles of the Hacettepe University Regulations for Postgraduate Education and Examination are applied for exams and successful grades for each course.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

For a student to successfully graduate from this programme, they have to pass the Seminar course, collect at least 36 credits (equivalent to 120 ECTS credits), and to effectively defend their thesis work they have prepared. The students who have obtained the necessary conditions described in the Hacettepe University Regulations for Postgraduate Education and Examination are eligible for graduation.
