D.1. General Information about Program

Occupational Health Ph.D. Program conducted in Institute of Health Sciences, Department of Public Health, aims to graduate students equipped with skill and knowledge on basic principles and practice of occupational health and safety, to participate in studies aiming to increase health level and quality of life of workers and to contribute to the development of the science of occupational health and safety in Turkey.

 Foreign students also have the opportunity to apply for the PhD Program. Program language is Turkish.

 The duration of the PhD Program is four years (eight semesters). The first two years (four semesters) consist of required and elective courses, whereas the third and fourth years consist of the thesis work.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

The program accepts graduates of medicine directly. Graduated from health sciences, science, and social science related faculties can accept after get master degree of Occupational Health or Public Health and Safety, Public Health, Health Administration, Epidemiology and other related areas*. (Medical stıdent, who is in the MD PhD program can apply to the program when providing conditions of relevant legislation.

The student candidates need to fulfill the requirements specified in the ByLaw of Hacettepe University on Postgraduate Studies and Examinations (

*Related areas: They should be proposed by the department of public health (Faculty of Medicine) and approved by the board of Institute of Health Sciences.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to qualify for the Occupational Health PhD Degree, the students are required to get at least 120 ECTS/ 21 national credits (42 national/180 ECTS fort he students without having MSc Degree) and to complete a thesis work.

 At the end of the third semester, the student needs to take the Doctorate Qualifying Examination in the fourth semester. The students, who fulfill these criteria with an average academic score of at least 2.75, are allowed to take the Doctorate Qualifying Examination.

 The thesis, which is necessary to write at the end of the Doctorate study, should provide at least one of; innovation to science, developing new scientific methods or to apply a well-known method to a new area options.

At this stage, the student prepares a thesis under the management of the advisor. After completion of the thesis work, the candidate presents his/her thesis to a jury and defends. Jury considers the candidate successful when the candidate defends the thesis successfully in terms of competence, knowledge, interpretation and synthesis.

 In the thesis period (two semesters), the student earns 120 ECTS.

 Students are subjects to the byLaw of Hacettepe University on Postgraduate Studies and Examinations.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Students are allowed for lateral transfer, and credit transfer between programs according to the ByLaw of Hacettepe University on Post-Graduate Studies and Examinations.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The aim of this program is for students to gain to be able to conduct occupational health and safety issues efficiently -based on prevention and protection- in a scientific perspective, to be able to comment on the matter, to reach new synthesis, to be able to do an academic research independently; for them to be able to give lectures in the level of undergraduate and graduate, to raise their knowledge and their competences on taking responsibility at national and international organizations.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of Occupational Health PhD Program may carry out service and training functions in academic institutions, public and private sector and NGOs related to occupational health and safety, particularly in central and local organizations affiliated with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and the Ministry of Health.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The duration of this PhD Program is 8 semesters. The Program consists of a total of 240 ECTS credits (21 national credits) for the students who applied after competing MSc Degree in Public Health or Occupational Health, and 300 ECTS credits (42 national credits for the students who do not have MSc degree). The program is composed of four semesters of course work (30 ECTS credits per semester), and four semesters of thesis work (120 ECTS credits in total).

 Necessary credit is obtained from elective lessons. If advisor suggests, they may take lessons from other programs not included in program curriculum. Prerequisites of elective lessons are (if present) included in the explanations of lessons. A student who has taken mandatory courses may take elective lessons of Institute of Public Health or other Institutes of Hacettepe University regarding the thesis whose preliminary studies he/she will carry out in accordance with the approval of consultant.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation and assessment methods for each course are described in the course info packs prepared by each instructor. After completing their courses in four semesters, students need to pass the PhD qualification exam before they continue with their thesis work. For the examinations and pass grades, respective articles of the ByLaw of Hacettepe University on Post-Graduate Studies and Examinations shall be applied.

In order to graduate from the Doctoral Degree Program in Public Health, the conditions specified in the ByLaw of Hacettepe University on Post-Graduate Studies and Examinations must be met.
