Course objectiveThe main objective of this course is to introduce the basic terms, concepts and approaches related to ritual and its features and functions; examine the leading and contemporary studies on rituals and analyze the meaning, functions, structural and performative characteristics of ritual and music in Turkish Culture; in the context of ritual and music relationship. 
Learning outcomes
  1. The Students define the ritual and state the basic concepts, characteristics and functions
  2. They explain the relation between ritual and music.
  3. They xplain the relation between belief and music; mythology and music.
  4. They Comprehend the relation between ritual and musical traditions in Turkish Culture.
  5. They Recognize the leading and contemporary studies on rituals in the field of ritual and music.
  6. They Analyze the meaning, functions, structural and performative characteristics of ritual and music in Turkish Culture in the context of ritual and music relationship
Course ContentRitual: Definition, features and functions. The relation between ritual and music. The relation between belief and music; mythology and music. The relation between ritual and musical traditions in Turkish Culture. Ritualistic music traditions. Religious rituals. The leading and contemporary studies on rituals in the field of ritual and music. The meaning, functions, structural and performative characteristics of ritual and music in Turkish Culture in the context of ritual and music relationship.
