Course objectiveThe objective of this course is to examine gender based social arrangements and processes in defining the body and its relation to social self.  
Learning outcomes
  1. - Within the framework of different social, cultural and historical contexts, learns the social meanings and forces that shape human bodies and bodily experience. (3, and 4)
  2. - Critically analyzes the important social/cultural forces in understanding the social construction of gender. (3, 4, and 5)
  3. - evaluates theoretical and methodological perspectives concerning gender based construction of the body. (4, 5, 6, and 8)
Course Content- Theorizing bodies in sociology
- Social and biological bodies
- Theories on the social meaning of body: Elias and the civilised body; Foucault and the docile body; Bakthin and the Grotesque body
- Individual in society and the social body
- Social construction of identity around the body
- Bodies inscribed with meaning through culture
