Course objectiveTo examine Turkish modernisation as a proces of continuation of the Ottoman modernisation and to evaluate the political, social, cultural and economic dynamics determining the foundations of the Turkish Republic and its modernising reforms.  
Learning outcomes
  1. 1. Learns the general conditions of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries.
  2. 2. Compares the modernization reforms of 19th and 20th centuries.
  3. 3. Observes the effects of political, social, judicial and martial reforms on the society.
  4. 4. Understands the effects of modernization on the political and social life in the Ottoman Empire.
  5. 5. Analyses the effects of the Ottoman modernization to the Turkish Republic.
Course ContentThe course aims to shed light on the continuity and change from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic that started at the First Constitutional Era (1876) and its effects on the state and the society.

1. Analyzes the events of Turkish National Struggle, history of Turkish Republic and the process of Modernisation of Turkey in connection with past and today's events and makes projections for the future.  X
