Course objectiveThe aim of this course is to gain knowledge on basic principles of infant and child nutrition including breastfeeding as well as weaning period and to learn how to monitor the growth of the child. 
Learning outcomes
  1. To know healthy nutrition recommendations in case of pregnancy and lactation according to National Dietary Guidelines.
  2. Explain the characteristics and health problems of the pregnancy and lactation period
  3. Knows the needs of energy, macro-nutrient and micro-nutrient nutrients and their functions in the body during pregnancy and lactation
  4. Knows the effects of nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy and lactation on mother and baby
  5. Knows the mechanism of breast milk and the physiology of the breast, the importance of breastfeeding and its effects on infant and maternal health. Knows and explains the content of breast milk, its content, periods, the factors affecting the content of breast milk, and the mechanisms.
  6. Knows, monitors and evaluates national and international programs related to pregnant, lactating and breastfeeding. knows the effect of infancy nutrition on the growth and development of the baby.
  7. Knows the digestive functions, enzymes, energy and nutritional requirements in infancy according to National guidelines based on evidence. Provides training on the importance of breast milk in infancy and the continuation of breastfeeding. Defines the transition period to complementary foods and starting complementary foods with safe food. It enables to start complementary foods and to implement plans according to the needs of the baby. Knows the characteristics of children aged 1-6, plans their nutrition, knows and recognizes diseases caused by nutrition, and carries out studies for prevention.
  8. Knows nutrition-related diseases of infancy and childhood. Makes training's and practices for prevention. Knows the main causes, predisposing causes, classification and treatment of protein-energy malnutrition, anemia and childhood obesity and similar nutrition-related diseases, which are common and important nutritional problems of infancy and childhood, and works to prevent them. To be able to Growth monitoring and evaluates during childhood period. Anthropometric methods used in growth monitoring. Knows and applies internationally used standards and references. Can use anthropometric evaluation programs. Plans and implements nutrition and growth monitoring and evaluation studies of infants and children according to epidemiological rules.
