Course objectiveAs a socio-cultural outcome of resurgence of class and identity-based social dynamics, in Turkey as well the debate on discrimination and hate speech has been dramatically escalated and attracted academic interest during the last years. The main aim of this course is to create and/or increase communication students? awareness about hate speech that has been produced and reproduced particularly by the media; strengthen their skills in analyzing media content via the perspective acquired during the course; and, more importantly, assist them to apply journalistic/professional strategies that are aware of and sensitive to the discrimination and hate speech during their professional production in the future. 
Learning outcomes
  1. At the end of this course students will -understand basic concepts related to discrimination and hate speech,
  2. -analyze discriminative texts appeared on print and visual media,
  3. -explain the main discussions about the topic in the field of social sciences,
  4. -able to produce media texts/contents that are not reproducing discriminative, otherizing and marginalizing discourses,
  5. -understand the importance of strategies, civil society initiatives/NGOs and collective action in fighting against and struggling with discrimination
  6. -be informed about actual examples of discrimination and plurality from real life settings via in-class projects and home works.
Course ContentIn this course, we will look at the concrete examples/processes in which hate speech/discourse occur, be developed and legitimized via socio-psychological perspectives. The concepts such as discrimination, hate speech, hate crime, tolerance/intolerance, freedom of speech and their relations to each other will be discussed throughout the course. During the later stages of the course, the close connection between and media and hate speech will be dealt with in terms of language-discourse and reproduction of meaning. This will be followed by analysis of actual cases/examples from journalism, cinema, documentaries, advertising, television, Internet as well as alternative media. At the end of the course we will discuss about the possibilities of resistance and action against hate speech; strategies to deconstruct discriminative language and demonstrate prevailing discriminate patters in media texts.
