Course objectiveThe aim of this course is to help the student gain the knowledge, skills, and competence required to analyse and discuss the historical and theoretical development of British Cultural Studies with specific emphasis on the main themes and topics of the field through analysis of the works and the views of the cultural studies theorists.

  3. defines and explains the concepts and theories of British Cultural Studies.
  4. identifies the place of British Cultural Studies in cultural studies and explains its main principles.
  5. defines ideology, discourse, representation and applies the theories of these in visual and written texts and contexts.
  6. analyses and criticises cultural representations in given texts, develops a critical and analytical approach.
Course ContentIn this course, definition and history of British Cultural Studies, definition(s) of culture, high culture, popular culture, major principles, terms, theories and interests of British Cultural Studies, representation and discourse and ideology, relationship between culture, discourse, hegemony and ideology, consumer culture and the media, multiculturalism, postcolonialism are introduced and discussed.
